How much does someone have to make a year to live in a nice apartment in Manhattan?
I'm talking about nice view of the city, etc.?

BoomChikkaBoom
Between 100,000 and 150,000 a year minimum.

There are some subsidized places available for artists and low-income, but the waiting list is typically 10 to 20 years.

If you want a nice view of the city, move to New Jersey.

In NYC, your view is typically of other buildings that surround your building.

omg..NY is so expensive to live in, you'd not believe it seriously. Go to the classifieds of one of the local papers and just see what renting and leases are for a small example. Not to mention everything is just more expensive..food, transportation..normal everyday thing are higher.

You don't need to make anything.... all you need are wealthy parents.

Apartments in Manhattan are going for $1,000 a square foot. Do a little simple math to see what size place you can afford!

curiositycat
Oh my, at least $8000 a month. No kidding.

jercha
200,000 a year

Oh Boy!
Within the last couple of years the average price for an apartment in Manhattan topped $1 million. Ignoring the 'nice' requirement let's assume you're talking about such an apartment and ignoring rent control. The annual rent might be about 7% of that or $70k ($5833 per month). You tell me how much you'd need to make to afford that monthly rent.

a gazillion dollars

hum...like in the upper 5 digit figures at least....

My best friend lives in Manhattan and she makes about 75,000. She has a one bedroom in upper East side with no view whatsoever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Her view is actually the next neighbor's living-room window.

Unless you get really lucky (odds are definetely not in your favor)...you have to make good money just to get a view of the street (which depending on the area might not be a good idea).

If this helps...Donald Trump has a view of Central park!

lol...depressing isn't it?

nyc in here
You need to earn 40-50 X your rent, i.e. if your rent is $3,000 a month, you need to earn $120,000 - $150,000 gross. my last apartment was $3395 and my girlfriend and i earned about $180,000 combined. Still, we only shared a large one bedroom in Chelsea. There is no easy answer I am afraid.

The best value for your money can currently be found in the far east 80's and 90's as well as certain buildings in the financial district and battery park. In these areas, you can find a comfortable one bedroom for around $2700 and less if you are willing to sacrifice space, light, closets, etc.

You're talking about at least $3500.00 a month rent, so at least $100,000.00.
