The silent pen | How much is your morgage? Is it more than £1000 a month? |
Is it hard to find the cash? Do you wish that you had rented instead of buying? |

I do rent and I feel like a sucker for doing so. After 20 years, what do I have? Rent receipts!
In the U.S., mortgage has a "t" in it. Just think of mortuary. As in, "I'll be dead if I don't make my morTgage payment on time."
Be groovy, Pen.

No, i only pay £479 a month for an £80,000 mortgage because i saved hard to put a big deposit down so i wouldnt have to have a massive mortgage, i didnt want to be struggling every month. |

It's a little less than £1000 a month.
I don't regret buying but i do worry about taking on such a large mortgage on my own. |

When we first started buying it did seem a struggle. But after a few years it will seem comparatively cheaper.
Our mortgage is £300 a month and we have about 7 years to go.We most certainly couldn't rent anything for that, not even a shed in our locality!
My only regret was we went for an endowment and not a straight forward repayment
I think renting is only good as a short term option,my daughter is a student and shares with 2 others, her contribution to the rent is £280 plus bills.
My advice would be keep with it,check out mortgage comparsions sites. If you have a spare bedroom think about renting it out to a poor student ! If you have a garage rent that out too!
Good Luck |

We live in Scotland and I dont think the house prices are as hefty as in the rest of the UK, although they are catching up! Our mortgage runs at about £450 per month plus another £158 per month for Council Tax. |

Our mortgage is £700 a month - hideously expensive, but sadly renting would cost around the same for the same as what we have.
We see it as a necessary evil, and we took a shorter term to repay, and we have around 40% equity in the property, so as a long term thing it should be ok. |

My mortgage is considerably higher...though I'm not sure what that equals in American dollars. But no renting is throwing your money away. I can't imagine too many circumstances where it would be better to rent rather than own. When you own it builds equity and is an investment that can be used as collateral and so on. It increases your wealth, strengthens your finances, gives you a better credit rating, and shows maturity in finances. Renting has no benefit outside of lack of maintenance and the ability to pack and move quickly if necessary. |

gosh it seems such a lot of money doesnt it! it depends where you live , down london, i dont imagine thats very much at all for a mortgage.
i've generally found that it's usually a little cheaper to buy than to rent!
but it doesnt work like that of course when it comes to buying a house.
i spent 8 years renting, then when i came to buy a house , i was naive in thinking i could get a mortgage making roughly the same payments as renting. but it doesnt work like that, it goes on how much you earn - rather than how much you can pay per month.
no i am glad i brought my house, at least i will finish paying my mortgage one day!!!! renting is forever!!
you would still have to find the money each month , whether you were buying or renting!! |

£500 a month
I'd be scared if it was over a grand.
Glad I bought, renting is just burning the money at least a mortgage means you get something back in the end. |

Theres pro's and cons to renting and buying for example if you rent, you only pay usually one utility bill, while if you buy you pay it all. If you rent you don't have to worry about maintenance if you buy you do. If you rent you can't paint the walls, if you buy you can. see what i mean? |
