Best to give a month or they will take your months deposit usually.

If you break the lease, you'll need to
1) Find someone to take your place (sublet)
or
2) Pay off your rent in full

You can't just skip on your lease when something better comes along. Is your name on the lease? If so, then you need to send a 30 day notice. If not, then you need to talk to your roommates and work out situation.

BUT somehow you owe that money.

You would have to read (or have an Attorney read) over the terms of the lease agreement. Honestly, I would just stay there for the 5 months you have left since it's not a significant amount of time. Your penalties and/or fees for breaking your lease aren't worth breaking a lease that has less than 5 months left.

If you signed a six month contract in your own name then you either need to stay the six months, or pay the fees for your landlord to find another tenant to share the house. That will mean either the advertising costs for a private ad or the agency fees for a reputable rental agency. You have entered into a legally binding agreement and, putting the shoe on the other foot, how would you feel if your landlord decided he just didn't want you to stay on and make you homeless. You cant make up the rules just to suit your mood at any given time - honour your word.

upon signing that 6 month contract..your landlord should of discussed with you how much notice you would need to give. or it may be stated in that contract. you are perfectly within your rights to see this contract or ask for a copy.if you do not stay there the full 6 mnths yes you will definatly lose your deposit. and depending how much notice your landlord has asked for? if you do not live your notice you may be eligible to pay rent for that period.
you could always try your local citizens advice and they will give you advice.

alsballoondepot
you need to read the lease agreement to see what is stipulated

how much notice required

also, are you a lease holder or an occupant?

If you are a leaseholder, yes, you may be able to give notice, but that would still leave you liable under terms of the lease agreement as well as your friends. Where I have worked in the past, room mates release each other from the lease in written agreement form that releases you from rent liability.

Its hard to answer without more specifics, ie, is it an apartment, private home, did you fill out an application for the place you are renting, did you move in with the other friends at the same time or did you take someones place on the lease?
