How much notice does a landlord have to give a tenant before raising the rent?

msjuliet2005
Usually 30 days.

akc1106
The rent cannot be raised during your lease, so it would have to be done at the end. If you are on a month to month, then a 30 day notice is required.

a month w/out w/lease end of lease

Here they notify you 30 days before your lease expires that there will be a rent increase.....actually there is a rent increase every year....this year it may be more severe though because of the cost of insurance has doubled or more and they have to get someone to pay for it...guess it's us.

A landlord can not raise rent in the middle of a lease, but they can at the end of the lease. Most states it is a 30 to 60 day notice given. Some states also have caps on how much the rent can be raised. You need to look up your local landlord tenant laws and you shouldn't have any problem finding the actual statute.

Depends where you live. In CA, they have to give a 30 day notice if hte increase is more than 10%

none. they can raise the rent at any given notice without telling the tenants.

Stuart
Depends on the state. Each state has its own landlord-tenant laws.

Generally, I'd think a minimum of 90 days, and preferably 6 months or more.

if you have a lease... it cannot be increased until that contract has ended
then it can be increased to whatever they decide
you will notified of next lease agreement usually 2-3 months before the old one expires..giving you enough time to decide if you want to stay there or not

You will have to check your local landlord-tenant acts or laws as they differ in every country/province/state.

Here in Ontario Canada, I don't think they need to give notice. They can raise the rent at the end of every month. They cannot raise it in the middle of a month.
