lucyloves_x | How much rent should I pay? |
I am on £1170.94 after tax each month which breaks down to £292.90 a week. I still live with my mom, but she doesn't have to pay rent but she does have rent arrears, and we have to budget for gas and electric (its like pay as you go), the phone, internet and tv is £20 a month, food, water rates etc.
How much would be fair for her to take off me? I get paid monthly. If i havent covered something, just ask me in your answer and il add it on. Additional Details I am paying for a monthly phone bill about £40, car insurance £60 a month, petrol about £30 a week & then i buy my own toiletries & a few food items that she doesnt like.
My younger brother, who's on the dole (i know, he's a jerk) pays up £60 a month and he's on £160 a month. He also has a £40 phone bill to pay for on top of that. He uses the internet & tv most. |

Is it just you and your mum at home? I would add up all the house hold bills and divide that by the number of members in the household. Then you pay for your share. |

The fair way to do it would be to half everthing if it's just the two of you living there, however I don't think my parents would ever expect me to pay half the living costs of living at home especially if you Mum is earning more than you.
I know some of my friends that are living with their parents pay about £20-£30 / week as a contribution.
I would ask you Mum to let you know how much she would like to help with bills etc as it really depends on her situation.
PD - everyone knows what the currency is in USA, but thanks for the reminder! |

Does your mum work?
If not, and depending on where you live and if its a council owned property, then your mum may be liable for rent as your working and live there too. Check out from CAB cos you don't want your mums rent arrears to get any worse because of this.
I was a single working parent and took £40.00 per week from my two kids which isn't a lot considering what they got for it, food, gas, electricity, phone, tv. washing and ironing done, etc. They both bought flats of their own recently and only now do they realise what it takes to make it all work.
You could go halves with her on everything which I'm sure she'd appreciate if there's only the two of you. Remember to budget for your monthly outgoings for yourself too. Talk to her and see what she thinks. Good luck. |

Unfortunately, I don't think you're going to come up with an answer that is "fair".
When my family was in a similar situation, my brother objected to paying the same amount of rent as me because he had a lower paying job ... but that wasn't my fault! Having been given the exact same advantages by our parents - including having a university education - there was no reason why we couldn't earn the same sort of money. In your case, I'm assuming you and your brother have had the same upbringing, yet he chooses to be on the dole.
I think there are two things to consider here:
- If I was a parent and I didn't NEED to take money from my children, I don't think I would (I'm aware that some people do need to - my own mother did)
- But then, even if your mother didn't need to, perhaps it may be a good idea to do so to ensure that her children know how to budget, how to run a household, etc
Normally, people should expect housing costs (including rent, council tax and utilities) to account for one third of your take-home pay. Since you say your mother isn't paying rent, then yours should be less than a third. But, food does not normally come into this total.
Ask your mother exactly how much all of these things cost. I think you could afford - and should expect - to pay up to £250 per month, but then, you should certainly not be subsiding the rest of the family at your age, so if the total cost is relatively cheap then you certainly shouldn't need to pay that much.
I disagree with you that your mother takes too much off your brother. Where in the real world are you going to be able to live for £60 per month? Whilst I don't know the background and don't want to sound judgemental, perhaps she is trying to teach him to get off the dole and go and get a job. |

Hiya !
You don't give your age - but if you're earning that - a reasonable figure would be around £90-£100 a week all in.
I'm living in a rented flat - my living expenses for the week work out to around - £110 - which doesn't include my mobile phone. I have high electric bills due to my keeping reptiles as a hobby !
You also don't say how many others live with you - in which case, you could add up all the bills for the month - divide by the number of working people living there - add on 10% for inflation - and you all have a reasonable amount to contribute
Hope this helps you out. |

Well what bills are you currently paying for right now? Your car insurance, your mobile telephone bill, the run of petrol. Even if you are paying these bills they are only for the good of yourself and no one else.
If you use the electric as much as your mother does, then pay half of it.
If you use gas, water, phone or internet as much as your mother does then again pay half of it.
It'll teach you something when you buy a place of your own! |

Well firstly, I would take £80 off your brother, it might make him go out to work, and also if he is at home all day I would make him do things around the place.
My daughter 20 lives at home, she pays £140pm, she has car loans, phone bills, shop cards, but that's not my problem, she brings home about £1000pm, The housekeeping money should be the first thing you consider, after that's it up to you what you do with it. If you cant afford to buy that extra dress, then tough. Believe me it gets harder as you get older. |

it depends on how much is paid overal, it would be nice to split it down the middle if possible. |
