I live in a 3 bedroom apt with 2 other girls. One of the bedroom is a master bedroom - larger in size and has a bathroom inside the room. This room also comes with its own parking space. The other 2 rooms are equal in size (smaller than master) and share 1 bathroom. The total rent is $2,475. We have split the rent to charge the girl with master bedroom $895, and $790 for the other 2 rooms. Now the girl with the master bedroom has her bf living there for the past 6 months. He has moved in all his clothes, computer, TV, etc. He has mail sent there, is there when she is not there, etc. He is clearly living there instead of visiting frequently. How much should this couple be paying in rent for sharing the master bedroom?

I'm struggling with this issue right now, but I agree with keeping the 'rent' the same for the room, but splitting the utils 4 ways. Yes an added body is someone to crowd your couch, tv, or kitchen, but there's no real 'logical' way to figure out how much that inconvenience should cost you. What I came up with, is that the added body will only be a problem to you if you can't stand him, and if that's the case no $$ will change that, so same rent + 1/2 utils (1/4 for him, 1/4 for her) if you get along, and if you don't, time to kick them out or move. |

They shouldn't pay more in rent because the master bedroom remains the same size no matter how many people are in it.
What should be happening is that the utilities should now be split 4 ways instead of 3 because 4 people are using them. |

Wrong!!!! Not split four ways! I have had this problem too. The room is rented by your friend. She pays her portion of the rent each month. That room is paid for by her. She could have 20 people sleeping in her room it's still paid for. As far as other expenses, such as water, electricity, cable, etc. should be split equally between all party living there. |

Actually space is not an issue. The 2 people take up the same amount of Sqaure Footage, and are paying for the extra footage, but since there are bills that accrue and rise becuase of the extra body present, then the Bills should be split evenly, The boyfriend pays his share, girlfriend pays hers, and you pay yours.
Actually sounds like you are not happy with the situation, so have a talk, and someone move out before you start fighting. |

No matter what you do it would never be fair to someone. What would happen if the other two girls moved in their boyfriends? You are not renting rooms you are renting an apt. which includes the bathroom space, kitchen space, den space etc. You are giving up part of your privacy. That has a value! All persons are equally responsible. Not only should he pay an equal share of everything including food, utilities etc. but I would insist he be added to the lease and pony up his share of the deposit. She should have asked her room mates before she moved in. The easy way to bring it up is to vote on it. Remember he is not a tenant so he gets no vote. You would win 2 to one every time. |

Why are you leaving out important information? Are the utilities divided up and if so, how? Are his belongings occupying any space other than the bedroom and it's bathroom. If so, then where?
If he and his belongings are confined to her area, then no more rent should be required, obviously. Charging more would just amount to pettiness. If he and his belongings extend past her area, then he should be charged according to the amount of additional space he takes up. However, any additional utilities should be paid by her or him. |

Ouch, it's a difficult one.
It depends how much you like them/are prepared to make sacrifices for a happy house.....
Personally I'd charge rent on a per room and not a per person basis.
But it's fair that the masterbedroom should be more expensive. It just depends how nice it is! |
