How much rent should we charge our college grad daughter?
We have been charging our daughter $100 per month rent since she graduated college two years ago. We feel that this is low, but we wanted to help her get back on her feet. Does anyone know what a reasonable rent would be now that she is capable of being independent? She makes a little over 40K per year.

Two years?!?!? If she is making 40K it is time for her to go! Up her rent to about $400 a month, but put the money into a savings account. Tell her she has 6 months to find a place of her own. Let her know she needs to start saving for her deposits and such.

When the six months are us, give her the amount you saved to help her with her deposits, or to use as an emergency fund.

The fact that she is still at home 2 years later means that she likes living with dad. Maybe that is fine with you. Leave the rent at $100 until she offers more. /

David S
You're right...$100 is low, especially if you're including board.

One way to calculate her rent would be to divide your mortgage payment (assuming you have one), by the number of people living in the home. With the cost of food, I'd also charge her for board.

She'd be very hard pressed to find a deal that good anywhere else, and it's really time for her to stand on her own two feet anyway.

Rush is a band
General guidelines for rent are up to 25% of gross income, so she could technically afford about $750-800 a month. She's your daughter, and you want to help her out, but there needs to be at least a little incentive to move out. Making rent ~$400 a month is a great idea (as is saving that money to help out later).

This also gives her a little incentive to get out since $400 a month for a room is a little high.

good luck!

I wouldnt change it. If she is a good child (and it sounds like she has done good for herself, with your help) then help her out until she wants something better. She will eventually find someone to be with and she will want to move out and get her own house, and then you will start to miss her. I say help her so you will always know that you did what you could to make a little easier for her.

If this is house or apartmentI would say it all depends on the square footage she is renting. The bigger the place the more she should pay. If she is renting and full and has sole use of the space it would be no different if you rented to a stranger.

If she is still in the same house she grew up in and living with her family still at home I would say she should pay 1 part of the household expenses, If she is sharing the space with 2 others then she should pay 1/3rd of the mortgage/rent and utilities and food (if she eats at home)

A person making 40,000 a year should be paying around 25% of their income for housing. This is on the gross income = $833 a month PLUS electric, phone, etc. If it were my kid, I would be charging $800 a month (which includes electric, cable, etc). She would pay for her cell phone. Plus $200 a month for food.

It's time you cut the string.

She should be the one offering more. Demanding more may hurt you guys relationship. But a good amount is $400 i think

nessa
that is very low especially with her income.
I am 20 years old and my boyfriend and i rent a house for 750 and can afford that on 23000 a year so you should charge her at least 400 if just solely to teach her how to live on her own. If you feel like that is to much you can always save it for her for when she moves to her own place or buys a home.
Also when i lived in south fl i paid 890 for a VERY small one bedroom so it all depends where you live but try and get her used to the cost of living. Other wise she may be shocked when she gets on her own

Is she paying you rent and living in the house with you or do you have an apartment or other house that she is renting? If it's a separate dwelling then charge her what you would charge someone else. Look in the newspaper and see how much other places are being rented for. If she makes 40K a year she can definitely pay more than $100. If she's living with you and paying you then I don't think you should charge as much as a separate dwelling since she's basically renting a room. You would still have the same bills without her so just figure how much more you think the utilities are because of her.

well an average rent for one person is about 700. i would say you should give her 350 rent....and raise it if shes reallly not helping out in the house. also, you should try to look at a reasonable price apartment for her.
