How much rent to charge my girlfriend?
i have a two bedroom flat. my girlfriend is moving in soon. i was wondering what is a fair amount to ask her for rent. my gas and electricity is £40 a month, TV, phone and broadband package about £35 a month. the council tax is £86 a month and my mortgage is £488 a month (but can I really ask her to go halfers on that since she's not a co-owner? i don't think so.) Your opinions are much appreciated!

if you have decided to live and share a home as a couple its only fair that she pays half of the up keep of the home which would in my opinion include all household bills

She should pay 1/2 on the bills, 1/3 of the mortgage, and you should pay all of the council tax.

Chris
When I moved into the house my girlfriend owned, I split every shared bill right down the middle: mortgage, phone, TV, food, utilities, ect. It was all split 50/50.

My thought was that's what she'd charge any roommate, so it was totally fair to split it down the middle. It kept our financial situation seperate from our dating life - it was very stress free and we never had a fight about money.

By the way, we are now married. :)

Vlady
have her take care of the groceries and utilities. don't mention anything on the mortgage.

veg_rose
Get a one bedroom flat and enjoy the difference.

I do think half is quite fair. actually there are a lot of couples that do decide do split rent this way. in a way, this will also show you how she will handle money in the future-whether she is willing to help you with bills or not and how much...

I'd say half on everything except the mortage. Maybe just like 30%, since you would only be paying half and still have full ownership, its not really fair to her. Maybe if you know she earns less than you, you can set up a deal where its a little more fair like 30-70 or 40-60. When my fiance and I moved into our first apt he made more than me so I just payed water and electric and he payed rent (which was much more exspensive). It's really up to you and what she finds exceptable.

I moved in with my boyfriend last October as I was starting university in Liverpool and I came from London, so me living with him made sense.

I made it clear that I would pay for as much as I could, but would not pay for things that would not necessarily go up(for example-he would still have to pay his tv license and he would still have to pay the same amout of rent on the flat regardless of whether I was or wasn't there-but obviously things like the gas and electricity would go up with me there so I would contribute towards them)

We pay half the gas/electricity/food shopping each and he pays the rent and council tax. I pay for the BT line and he pays for out internet. That way I pay for my share but I am not left completely skint as my student loan doesn't cover much.
I would be fair, if she is not in a strong financial situation, I would make it easy on her, ask her to pay towards things but don't make her feel under pressure.

If she earns money, I would spilt the bills but remember, regardless of whether she is there or not you will pay the same amount for some things, so don't make her feel like her being there makes the bills all go up, as they won't.

150 - 200 a month?

beverley.newman1@btinternet.com
Without her there you would still have to pay most of this. You will lose the 25% reduction on the council tax,so it is reasonable to expect her to pay that amount. You will use more in utilities so I reccomend you put that up to £50 per month and go halves. If you charge her money towards your mortgage, then she could have a claim on the flat if you were to split up,so do'nt take money for that.Tv phone and broadband you already pay for,so just make her pay her share and any calls she makes. It may be advisable to give her a rent book if you are thinking of charging her rent to cover yourself and hold on to your belongings! Share food and drinks costs, cleaning equipment etc.I wish you luck, this sounds a bit mercenary to me to say she is your girlfriend!

kags
If she is moving in with you, and you are both happy with living together, then i suggest she pay half of everything, otherwise she would just be classed as a lodger/tenant. If you decided to move forward and get married you would both be responsible for half the bills. With regard to the mortgage, if her name isnt going to be added to it, i would still say yes, she should pay half. I have done this in my relationship. You are co-habiting, so you should both be responsible.

talk to her and tell her what your financial situation.I am sure she want to help you.

Carrie Bradshaw wannabe
my boyfriend is moving into my house with me and we are going halves on everything! He sees that as fair so should your girlfriend i would think! bear in mind wour council tax will go up if you were getting a discount for single occupancy!

cmonyousaints
why dont you ask her to pay for food, I dont think you should ask her to pay half, see what she offers, this is a big move you are both making and it must be handled with tact.

Neil M
I would have thought that payments 'in kind' would cover her share - cooking, cleaning, sewing, ironing, slippers, pipe and a 'little something for the weekend' ?

Dana Blanco
make sure they you are protected under any common law that states if she lives with you as a couple for a certain period and contributes to the household she is not entitled to anything.

If you are living as a partnership, would it just be better to split the living costs down the middle? Excluding the mortgage..

Look what the rents are for similar properties in the area and charge her half that.

split the bills 50/50

itsa o
ask her to work it off

depends on all sorts is she working has she loads of money
is she on a good income
( SEND HER TO ME HA HA )
or not working on benefits

ps if she fell pregnant and could not work would you support her then with a child
or still expect her to find income to pay her way
you should sort this out before she moves in to avoid future arguements
best of luck

of course everything should be split fairly between the two of you. but remember if it doesn't work out she could be entitled to half of everything if you split. I'd seek legal advice. if you are looking to just charge rent then you need to have something legally binding drawn up to state she is just a lodger. cover your own back. you never know whats going to happen in the future. i know its not romantic but its practical!

jemmaloo04
if you are going to be living as a couple i would say a 50/50 split of everything thats what my b/f and i decided on before i moved in with him. after we married i became a co-owner of the house as i had been contributing to the mortgage for 3 years prior to us getting married, and he had only bought the house the year before i moved in, its worked out ok for us.

hope this helps

dissertation_queen
It all depends on her financial situation. For example, how much would she be prepared to spend for a room in a flat share? Also, could she afford to go half with you and is she then getting "half" of the flat, or are you always making her feel that this is your flat?

I_Love_McRedneck
If she were moving into some place with a friend, she'd pay half of everything - so that's what you should expect.
The only way I could see this not working is if you make a considerable amount more than she does. Then, you could consider calculating your income as a % of total and then asking her to pay her proper percentage.

crazychick
Try £200.00 tell her that she is contributing to rising these bills up (electricity etc) and that you will need a hand towards the bills try say it as nice as possible..

God
'Rent?'

Oh dear.
