susan | How much should I tip each person for a $900 local move? |
I don't know yet how many movers they will send. Is it a percentage of the total cost and divide it up? Additional Details For those who asked I hired a local company and the men who will be doing the actual moving will probably be low paid, possibly minimum wage. Of course there will be no tip if they don't do a good job but I would like to offer a expression of appreciation for their hard work since my move is going to be a difficult one - lots of heavy furniture and stairs are involved. Thanks for all the responses! |

Typically people dont tip but I can tell you, the movers greatly appricate it. It shows a job well done and they are more inclinded to produce better and do more. Moving is not a easy job and it really tears up the mens body. Espically over time.
I agree with the 100 total. That will bring you to 1000 and thats 10%. |

nothing, maybe give them something to drink or a sandwich |

Well, depending on your situatio and on the type of person you are, if they did a very good job at handling all your things, I'd give them a small tip (if there are 5 guys, $20 ea), out of generousity. But, most likely, if I were you, I'd make a hearty cheeseburgers and drinks, for the men to eat and drink in the end, lol . . .so they will leave feeling fully satisfied, with happy bellies, after all that hard, physical work. When men work a physically hard job, they usually work up a great appetite. I know I did, when I used to work for as a assembly worker, at a printing factory for 12 hrs . . .working physically hard all day long. The last thing I wanted to do, when I was done working, was taking time to get something to eat, or make it, myself . lol, I was dead tired at the end of the day. I know how these mover men must feel, when they get done with their work. I am sure they'd really appreciate it, if you made them something to eat/drink ahead of time for them, to see that they get the energy they need to get thru their day. You'd be doing them a big favor! (Giving them both a small tip (for a meal, later) and, a small meal/drink, after they are finished working). I would encourage doing this, for the mover men, because I can relate how physical labor can work up a person's appetite. Without food in the tummy, a person's body will get worn down fast, and will not perform well. Most people who over-work themselves (their bodies) don't realize this and may refuse people's offer for food, but I would encourage them to. Look out for their needs, when they are there working, because if they fail to take care of their well-being (by eating a meal, after such hard labor), this can cause a work-related injury, later in their day. Believe me, it happened to me, when I refused to eat a good meal, while working. Instead, I told myself, I'd get something to eat, after I was done working, and when I was done, I was too tired to eat or make something to eat. So, my best advice, is to show these men some hospitality, by encouraging them to eat something, before they leave, so they have enough energy to get thru their day.
Hope this helps.

It will probably be three men. I would give them $20 each. |

May I suggest this web site. In addition it depends how friendly, professional, if the were careful with your stuff, quick, and pay a little extra if you think they went the extra mile and you would suggest them or would hire them again! |

I don't understand this notion of tipping movers.
They're getting the $900 and one would assume that they are being paid for their efforts.
Isn't that enough? |

That is how I would do it. |

me too. Total cost; divided up. probably 15 to 20 per cent would be fair. |

You don't tip movers. They are already making a ton of money off of your move as it is.
This "tipping everyone" is getting out of hand. Before you know it if you drop a package and someone picks it up for you, then you'll be wondering how much you should tip them.
Additional: As to how many movers they'll send, this is something they should have told you when contracting them. They should have asked you the size of the residence you were moving from and discussed the number of movers, the size of the truck, the distance of the move and the amount of time they expected the move to take, along with when the movers would be there.
Additional2: I'd like to know what happened to the work ethic in this country. I was brought up that if you accept a job then you do your best for the amount of pay you are being offered, else you don't take the job. And that if you are presented with a bill, then that is all you are required to pay. Tips are gratuities not requirements, and they should not be expected as payment nor given as though they should be. They should be given for an exceptional job as a sign of gratitude, not as additional payment for a person completing a job. |

Tipping movers is apparently not new. We moved from out of state 35 years ago, and the driver at that time informed us that tipping was customary. Maybe he was just scamming us, I don't know....... |

I would first see how nice and helpful they are before even considering a tip. Sometimes these guys are great and other times they are beligerant and disgusted to even be there. I would probably give them each $20. I would guess they will send 2 or 3. |

I always just give each guy twenty dollars if they do a really good job showing sensitivity for my concerns and put the furniture in place for me. Otherwise, I would give them ten to fifteen a piece. |

I've never "tipped" movers. When did that start? |

I never thought about tipping movers BUT
If there were extra challenges like lots of stairs or
Packing fragile items ( did they survive ? )
Or moving a piano and it didn't get damaged ?
Very hot day or rain day ?
I might tip .
Otherwise , they might be getting a good wage and if the tasks were fairly normal , I wouldn't tip .
Tipping is usually for minimum wage ( or less than ) people .
Judge your situation and decide if it warrants extra pay .
However , I do make up a jug or lemonade or iced tea and a healthy snack tray for workers . . .
to help keep things in motion !

I'd give them a $100 total then you will have spent $1000 and 10% of 1000 is 100 if you are feeling generous give $150 but anymore than that is silly.
Also FYI not too many people tip their movers since the tip usually comes at the end of the job. |

Susan why would you tip movers? I tip when there is a minium wage and they make money from tips, like the wait staff at restuarants. I wouldn't tip movers. |
