How much should a person save up to move out on their own?

Hi vrosslasm,
Assuming one is responsible and can hold down a decent job, you should have a least three months of your monthly budget in hand. Sit down and add up EVERYTHING you need to buy or pay for in a single month, don't forget your little luxuries whatever they may be, beer, cigs or drugs(?)etc., add another 10-20% to that for unexpected bills and multiply that X3 and thats what you need to do it right. Otherwise you can go out there with less and constantly borrow from friends and family to meet your monthly nut, become a pain in the ***, which defeats the whole purpose of being on your own. Right? Right.

A job plus 1 months expenses and any money that you will need to put up front -- for example, if you are renting your own place you will need to have a couple months rent plus a security deposit. Essentially, you need enough to actually get by and get started.

Six months living expenses.

you will need a lot and a job money goes fast

Sarepta
Speaking from experience, 3 months of living expenses is a good backing for someone to move out on their own.

penus
Probably at least 5000 and have a job that will cover twice what the rent is.

it depens on where your moving to. If your getting an apartment, you will need money for first months rent and last months rent, and possibly a security deposit. Also you will have to think about the cost of utilities. and you may need to save for some sparse furnishings and cookware.

you obviously will need first and last month's rent + deposit ready. that means if you dont have a job youll need at least a thousand bucks more to support you in your joblessness.. if you got a job youre already set.

escape the nest before the adults eat you.

Depending on if you are renting or buying a house/apartment you should save up enough to pay for rent-security deposit(usually the same as rent) and if you have to pay for extras like utilities and heat etc... and then have about $200.00 spending money. So your looking at almost 2000.00 for the first month if you pay for utilities etc-or 1500.00 if you don't. If you can-find a room mate where everything is shared in half so then you can save even more money each month.

it depends on where you would like to move to. - in general though, 2 times the amount of rent (assuming no pets are coming with you), electric deposit, gas deposit, telephone deposit and installation, money to buy kitchen items, money to buy basic furniture items, bathroom and cleaning supplies, laundry supplies and change to operate machines if they don't come with the apartment/house, gas for your car, insurance for your car, health insurance for yourself and bedding. For an upgraded lifestyle, you would also need to add - cable TV installation, high speed internet hook up, computer if you don't have one, etc.

If there are problems where you currently live that necessitate your leaving, you can ask around at local churches who may be able to help short term until you get up on your feet.
