You will need about £600 a month at the lowest to live in your own flat. You won't make this with a part time job you will need to work 40+ hours a week and still you are 16 which means your employers are limited to how many hours they can let you work and you will get a very low amount. Your only option is to find a really dingey student shared house, my ex had one in sheffield, shared with 5 people it was a complete waste hole and not fit for anyone really but that's all you'll be able to afford with a part time job.
another option is to find a friend to share a nice little flat with and split everything equally between you, these are hard to find. rent on a small one bed flat willbe £450 a month average (low priced wise) and another £200approx a month for food/bills/tax. |

Lily... try looking for a flat share... if you go down Ecclesall rd, there should be a few shop windows where folk are advertising for a flat share to spread costs... just a thought |

Could you not go and live at your Grans ?
In Leeds uni students pay from about £60 a week in a shared house. They need a deposit @ £300 and a parent as a guarantor.Gas/electric food etc is extra.
I know you said Sheffield but I thought it may give you an idea of costs. |

I felt just like this when I was your age, wanting to get out of an overprotective gaze. But now that I do live on my own I realise how much help you get from living with your parents. Sheffield would be a very hard place to live alone as well (trust me, I used to live pretty near so I know it quite well). Many landlords will refuse someone who they don't think will keep up payments, such as someone only in part-time employment, some only accept over 18s, and the first payment of deposit and a few months rent will be massive, can you afford that? You ought to just be honest with your mum, or at least wait until you're older to do what it is you want to do. |

Hello
Well firstly you have to be 18 to take out a tenancy agreement. So renting from a business will be a no. You may be able to rent a room in a shared house, or rent a room in a family house (that might be the best for you considering your age). Have you really thought this through? We all wanted to "escape" our parents when we were 16, and seriously its not all its cracked up to be. Be careful and have a good think first. |

Over-protective parents can be a bind.
I suggest you liaise with Sheffield University's Student Union - and their Student accommodation Department.
Hopefully one or other will be able to fix you up with something suitable - and let your mother know you're safe and sound.
The larger the house - the more the rooms -and therefore the lower weekly rent.
But that means 'sharing' on a large scale - with others you only get to know over time. So it's essential you have a morticed lock on your door - something a good Landlord (or Lady) should provide.
If you do so - you might be able to convince your Mum she should cease worrying. |

I'm sure whatever you are 'up to' its very important to you
But all this 'secret squirrel' stuff sounds childish
Renting a flat is a grown up thing there are lots of respondabilities, wait until you have left school and in a full time job.
Lily..,mums have a habit of finding out, whether your home or away, honestly is best, she may even help out you with costs, you know like a deposit on a flat.....all the best |

At 16 you are not old enough to sign a lease or a rent agreement. A landlord wont rent to you if you cant sign a rental agreement. |

You might struggle at the age of 16 to find a landlord/ lady who will take you ! I moved out at 17 and had problems, look on a website called Rightmove.com , you will find some there . Good luck |

You'll never be able to afford it, however cheap it is. You're too young too. The cost of living is also extortionate. You couldn't pay bills, food, council tax, even if you could pay the flat. |
