How old is too old for a house/flat share?
Is 33 y.o. too old for a house share? My mum said I should grow up and that I should be getting my own place at my age.

Well, I'm 29 and I still live in a house share ... because I have absolutely no other options available to me.

I live in central London. There is no way I could afford to buy or rent somewhere by myself. If I moved out of London to Kent or Essex then I could afford to get my own place, but with train fares added into the equation then it would still be just as expensive.

Basically, if you're single it's very, very difficult to afford your own place. And if you don't have kids and you earn more than about £24,000, you will never, ever get a council flat (not that I personally would want one).

It also depends on what your future plans are. I think that as long as you're renting, you should always aim to pay the lowest possible cost in order to save some money for a deposit for your own place.

Plus, there is the social aspect to sharing. Not everyone wants to go home to an empty house each night. Not everyone wants to sit alone all weekend in the house. Most people would prefer to have a bit of company and a bit of conversation. Plus housemates can be good to socialise with if you don't know many other people, like if you live a long way away from most of your other mates, or if you work in a job where you don't really meet people.

So I would say that you are never too old to live in a house share ... as long as you have good reasons for being there. I personally really, really hope to be out of house sharing by my 30th birthday.

It depends more on your lifestyle and who you're sharing with than your age. Some 18 year olds are too old to share, some 40+ people still live with their Mums.

If you're comfortable with the place you're in and the people you share with, then what's the problem? Also, maybe it's a bad time to buy a new house.

However if you're throwing money away on rent and aren't in a good house, then maybe yes it's time to move on and get your own place.

old know all
I know a man who never had his own place, but was a lodger in the house of two spinster sisters. After many years one of the sisters died. The survivor sold the house and she and the lodger bought a retirement flat between them. By then, they were aged about 70 and 85.

It probably would be a good idea but what ever you can afford is what is most important. These days its very hard to pay for you own place. A flat share would be good for you though, theres nothing wrong with that. I know people your age tha are still living at home!! lol

What for? You live life until you die, if you are having fun and life is good then do what you wanna do... at your age you can make your own decisions, not do what your mother tells you.

saristin
i know people who are 55 and still house share. they own it but rent out a few rooms.
I don't think I'd like it, cos I like to have some peace from time to time, but if you like the people you live with it shouldn't matter.

Handwashonly
You should shock your Mum and find a gorgeous blonde/brunette to share your flat with you.
Look I don't know your circumstances, but I wouldn't say you were too old to share.
But you are old enough to make your own decisions, and that should be your starting point.

33 years old is too old to be taking your mum's advice on how you live! If you want a roommate, go ahead and have one. In this day and age, it's a sensible idea to have someone to share all the expenses with.

Ask mum if she's ever seen "The Odd Couple".

depends on your finances
you could get a place of your own and rent out a spare room to help with the mortgage
find a couple of friends to buy a house in equal shares (in common)
whatever your finances can cope with then do

I think in todays climate there is no maximum age. I'm older than you and unfortunately still house share too. Not sure which country you're in but in the UK 13 of adults can't get on the property ladder due to the ridiculously high prices. Some of us missed the boat and were unable to buy when house prices were low and now we're paying for it. I know a few people older than me who still rent too. All I would say is hang in there, as prices are dropping. I'm so glad I didn't buy in the past 12 months as I'd be in negative equity now.
