How old were you when you first started paying for your own residence?

Mike
I was 18 years old and in college when I bought my first house.

That was the best investment that I have made in my life.

I was engaged to my husband and I was 22 years old and he was 24 yrs. old. We started building our house 2 years before we got married.....paycheck by paycheck. We did so much work ourselves and subcontracted out the work we couldn't do getting as many quotes as possible. It took us five years to finally finish the last project of building our back deck. Just in time for us to know we were having a baby. We lived with second hand lawn furniture as our only furniture in the house until we were done building. It was a lot of work, but I wouldn't have changed a thing...we lived there for 25 years until we moved......but I still miss that home!

When I bought my first house in 1971 I was 24 years old.

In my opinion, the question is not one of chronological age, but of one's maturity. (1) This means knowing how to budget to keep household income and expenses in balance. (2) It having enough money for 1 15-20% down payment so you don't get sucked into one of those teaser deals that will leave you bleeding on the street 15 months later. (3) And it means having the ability to pay the monthly mortgage + taxes + insurance + food on the table + care + anything else who think essential.

Is it possible? You bet you patootie, it is. But the harder you work BEFORE you sign a purchase offer, the smarter (and richer) you'll be a few years down the road.

Ask your chamber of commerce, community college, local banker and local real estate broker what information they can give you so that you'll be a happy home-owner.

Good luck

What do you mean by the term "own" residence? I had to pay "rent" to my parents once I got a job at 15.5. It was an object lesson in economics.

I had to pay for my "own" dorm room when I was at college --- Parents helped with tutition.

I signed my first lease at 18 but I had to obtain a countersignature then ---

By age 22 I was paying for a mortage on my own.
