How was your first apartment?
Was it hard, moving out of your parents house? We're you scared? I'll be moving with my boyfriend, so I wont be alone, but I'll have tons of more responsibilities. How was it for you?
Additional Details
My bf brings home $40,000 a year, so we're not that poor!

Ha it's so funny how people jump to conclusions, i.e. your bf cheating and you being a leach...

anyway- I still miss my parents a lot! I guess we just had a really close relationship but it is really good. 40k a year is plenty if you live modestly. We make about that much combined, maybe a bit more but barely- we definitely take advantage of thrift stores and sales, we cook all of our own food here- that way going out is special and a treat- you dont take advantage of it...

it definitely changes you... but usually for the better... just make sure your relationship is strong and i wish you all the best! you can do it! :D

It was hard but manageable. The quickest lesson I learned was that food, toilet paper, furniture etc did not magically appear anymore. I had to learn to budget for items that I took for granted that my parents bought.

After supplying all of this stuff I took for granted, my girlfriend and I learned that we did not have much money to have "fun" anymore.

Nah, I was ready to go. I was 21. I had spent 3 years after high school attending a community college while living at home and I was ready to get out. It was an on-campus apartment at a private university in Seattle. My parents lived about 25 miles away in the suburbs so I could easily catch a bus home when I wanted to. Since the apartment was on campus, and part of my college expenses, it was included in my tuition payments which were being taken care of by a combination of student loans and support from my parents, so there was no financial stress involved. Plus, it included everything like utilities, Internet, cable, etc. which was nice.

A one-room apartment with the bathroom down the hall.

Buy as much stuff as you can from the thrift store and rummage sales. Life will be twice as expensive as you are thinking, so you should both have second jobs for a while.

About a month after graduation, I came home from my job at a pet store (where I wasn't doing very well) to find my mom standing outside, amid a pile of boxes. She told me my bed & furniture were on a truck heading to Columbus, and I'd better call the driver to give him an address to drop it all off at. Luckily, I had friends who were renting a townhouse who let me stay with them. Not so luckily, I ended up living there with 4 other adults (in a 2-bedroom place), my roomies defaulted on the lease and left me in an abandoned townhouse with no power or heat in February.

I wish that I had been able to plan my first apartment better, and have a chance to save up for it. As long as you have some information, you have a leg up. Just keep in mind that if you and your boyfriend are both signing the lease, and something happens that ends in eviction, you will BOTH be responsible for the debt accrued (regardless of whether you're still together, or whose name is first). A good general guideline when moving in with someone, is to make sure you pick a place that is cheap enough that you could afford it by yourself if necessary. Someone once told me that if your paycheck for one week could not cover at least 3/4 of your monthly rent, it's too expensive.

alot smaller since my first apartment was a tiny studio with my then girlfriend and a cat, but it was good alot smaller and more uncomfortable, outside laundry, neighborhood etc... but as time went on you move to bigger and better and then your back in a house one day and married

It was GREAT. I had been ready to move out of my parent's house since I was 16 or 17 and I loved living by myself, being free to do what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it. I was 21 when I finally got my own place. This was back in the mid 80s, which is probably ancient to you. Just guessing. I was not afraid at all. I am the oldest child and had been half taking care of my parent's house and my siblings and step-siblings for as long as I could remember. I could date who I wanted, I could do what I wanted. Back then, rent was cheap and I only paid around 150 a month for a one bedroom apartment. Everyone who lived in my small complex- 8 apartments, was from about 20 to 35 years old. We used to have cookouts and parties and play softball in the park. I wasn't afraid at all. With your bf there you should have company and someone to help you out. My mother told me a year after I had moved out that she was amazed I hadn't had some dire emergency or set the place on fire. And I was like, "Haven't I been responsible for the first 21 years of my life?"Give me a break, lol. You will do fine as long as you guys can make the rent and bills and care for each other and give each other space.

It was a little intimidating at first, but you get used to the idea very quickly and it's great! Just make sure to manage your money wisely and you will be just fine. Congrats on your first place :)

Moving out alone is awesome. I would recommend living by yourself for a year (or at least with friends, not with your boyfriend / fiance / baby daddy / etc) and just chill for a year like that. You change a lot, it makes you grow up
