I'm a renter. If a bird hits my window and breaks it. Am I liable?

If a bird really did break it, of course.

You would also have an extremely dead bird to prove it. If a bird hits it hard enough to break it, the bird will have died from the impact and should be on the ground right near the window.

KYRealEstateGuy
If I were your landlord and this was the truth I would take care of it. But if I determined it was just some bullshit story to cover up you really breaking it, I'd be pissed.

P.S. I do think this is a bullshit story. I've seen several birds hit my windows and the only things broken after wards are the birds.

It would depend on what's in your lease, but more than likely you shouldn't be liable for such damages.

Oh dear, poor bird. Your landlord is liable, not you.

That is up to your land lord. Read the lease or ask them and they will clear it up for you.

renters insurance is a good thing to look into after you look over your lease!

The answer would be the same as, if a burglar broke in would I be responsible for the damages. The answer is yes. It happened while it is in your care. Another one would be, if a storm threw a tree into a window would you be responsible? Read your lease to find out exactly what you are responsible for.

You may also want to call the landlord and explain what happened and ask what he or she plans to do about it. Then you are making the assumption that it is their responsibility and see what they say.

I rent properties. If a window gets broken it is the tenants responsibility. If you didn't fix it, it would come out of your security.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Your lease probably wont have a clause covering this issue, and depending on your state laws and regulations you should be liable for it. If the bird hit your car would you hold the landlord responsible? A pain of glass is not that expensive, and you should have renters insurance that you can make a claim on. It was no fault of tha landlord and yes I know it's not your fault either, no one made the bird hit the window, but why would you assume its the landlords problem? Why not fix the window and be done with it. Regards KG
