I'm about to get my first apartment, however I see many places asking for references from the last landlord?
Since this would be my first place, what references am I supposed to provide them with?

Just tell him the truth. He should be okay with it.

Landlords want to be able to determine whether you have the ability and willingness to pay rent in full on time. One of the best ways is to check with previous landlords to see if you if have a history of doing this.

Since this is your first place, you should just put in that section on the application that this is your first rental and/or you've been living with your parents (or whomever).

There are several things that can help your case: 1) having any other good credit history is a big plus; 2) giving a larger than normal deposit; and 3) having someone with a good rental/credit history going on the lease with you, i.e., sharing responsibility for making sure the rent gets paid.

Most landlords don't want to be the first one to have to trust you - so count on either leaving a large deposit and/or having someone else on the lease with you. You might want to indicate a willingness to do this on your application. Good luck.

Work references (to prove you can afford it)
Maybe one from your last landlord to show you are a good tenant, and bank reference's.

Good luck at your new place...

Just tell him that this is your first time not living at home. He can always call to check your story, but if you are young enough for it to seem reasonable, he probably won't have to.

Your parents.

Just fill the rest of the application out. Give them personal references as well as work references. That might help since it's your first apartment. Good Luck!

Tell them this is your first apartment, you do not have landlord references however you do have character references from your school, place of employment, friends, family etc. All stating that you're responsible.

Talk to the landlord and let them know this is your first time out on your own and he should understand. Make sure you have proof that you have a job. That way he knows that you are reliable. That should be enough. Good Luck

Requirements vary from place to place. Make sure you provide him w/proof of income (some places require 3x the rate) and a good standing credit report. Be honest with your rental history. More than likely they will require a higher deposit. Good luck, sounds like you'll be okay.

If you don't have one, you don't have one. They might ask for your parents to cosign for you, but if you have a decent credit history otherwise, and a stable job that provides enough income to comfortably make the payments, you might just get it all on your own.
