I'm afraid my parents might keep my money from me when I move out...?
OK, to paint the picture roughly:
My friends from college and I wanted to live together. We decided to rent a large house and split the rent according to the room size, utilities used, etc. We are responsible kids and thought it out carefully, and several months of planning went into this.
ALL of our parents knew about our plans, so it wasn't a secret. My parents knew months in advance. one of our dads buys a house near campus for all of us, and we would rent it from him. The lease is written up, and I give it to my parents to cosign. This is in early april. I don't nag my parents into giving it back anytime soon. June comes and the lease needs to be turned in. However, my parents went behind my back and made plans for me to live with my aunt. It's unprovoked punishment. I've decided i'm moving out either way, I have enough money to be independent. However, my dad manages my bank accounts.
How can I ensure he doesn't maintain control and twist my arm by keeping my money? sry 4 length

hey dude !
i dono how old are u but if u are over 18 and the account is under ur name there should not be any problem. if the account is under ur and ur dad name then any body can take the money from the account u or ur dad. i dono if u work how much u make and wut are ur expenses but its not good to live the house with an argument and move out b/c even if u get all the money in da bankin account still u will lose ur parents support. it will mentally and emotionally be harmful plus financially in long term it will cost u way more than the money u have in that account. best way is just to go and talk to them like adults. tell them ur points why u think its a better choice to move with ur friends and hear their points with out a prejudgment.
i know exactly wut ur talking about b/c i want through same phase 5 years ago and now that i think about it this would be tha best choice i could make.

Do you have to have his signature to get the money out of your account? If not, open a new account and transfer the money.
Do your parents pay for your college? If so, you might be stuck living with your aunt.
If you have to have his signature to get money out of your account, you may want to talk to an attorney. Hopefully one will answer your question.
Good luck. I know it is tough to grow up when your parents don't want you to. I went through that. Try your best to be respectful to them. At least fake it in front of them ;)

If you are 18, and depending on how the accounts are established, you can go to the bank and have him removed from the accounts.

If he has no access to the accounts, he can't do anything.

Go to the bank and ask to speack with one of the officers and privately explain the situation. They'll be able to tell you if you can do it.

You need to find out whose name is on the account. If it's your dads, your out of luck, but if it's yours, you have a legal right to the money. If his name is on the account, get a lawyer if you can. Many will work pro-bono. Otherwise, get a job, and start earning the money. Maybe your friends can let you slide for the first month so you can make some cash, and then you start pitching in.

Wanting you to live with your aunt was NOT intended as punishment. They intended it in your best interests - they may have been mistaken, but it's unfair to assume that they sought to punish you. Having your dad buy the house for you was a good plan, but it may not fit in with their current economic situation. They should have told you about the change in plans earlier, but you shouldn't assume they are out to punish you, either.

The important question is, how old are you? If you're a minor, unfortunately your parents do control your assets, and it may be difficult to gain total control of your accounts yourself. If you're 18, then the money is yours and they can't control it.

Set up some checking and savings accounts in your name. Then try to transfer the money from your existing accounts (your dad is probably a cosignor on these accounts, which gives him the right/ability to actively manage the accounts) into the accounst that are in your name only.

Also, try talking honestly with your parents, without getting combative or blaming them for "deceiving" you. Explain to them that you thought you had their approval for a very reasonable plan, and this sudden change without your input upsets you. Ask if they will reconsider the original idea, or at least grant you full control of your money so you can learn to manage it effectively yourself.

Before you move out, open new accounts for yourself and transfer your money. :) But be prepared for them to totally cut you off financially

It sounds like your communication channel with your parents isn't working. Did they ever say it was OK with them for you to join your friends in the first place?

Unless you claim financial independence from your parents, you might not get your money.

My son's girlfriend, now his wife, got financial independence from her family by establishing an official residence in our state for the required time, 6 months I think. She got a driver's license here, and earned money and registered to vote. Once she did all the legal stuff, she was independent and could apply for loans, etc.

Attorneys often will give you a free 1/2 hour consultation if you want to talk to one......

She was not, by the way, at odds with her family. She just did better financially that way. Good luck!

If the account doesn't have your name on it, you might be out of luck. But if you are 18 and it is a joint account, I would think you would get at least half. Or if it's a trust thing, you might get it all.
