Set up a hidden camera |

Don't add a new lock. You could place yourself in violation of your lease. I would install a camera, but before you go through that expense, I would set things about in your property and know exactly how you placed them. If they are moved you'll know someone has been in there. |

While a landlord does have the right to enter his property for lawful purposes such as to effect needed repairs or to inspect the property, he MUST give prior notice. For non-emergency purposes that's generally 24 to 48 hours depending upon the jurisdiction.
Emergency entry is permitted without notice, however the landlord generally must leave notice in a conspicuous place within the unit at the time of entry.
The landlord never has a right to rifle through your personal possessions unless he can justify it for preserving the property. A trail of insects through your dresser drawers or smoke or foul odors emanating from them would be reason to have a look but curiosity about your gruns obviously is not.
If you believe your landlord is entering your home illegally you DO have the right to set up a security system, including video and audio recording equipment to catch him in the act. Not sure who the idiot is who is giving everyone the Thumbs Down rating on this but you DO have that right. If you do discover illegal entry then contact the police and file a formal complaint. Your video evidence would probably result in a guilty plea on his part.
Several posters have suggested that you change the locks. Do NOT do that unless you give the landlord a copy of the key! You do NOT have the right to lock the LL out of his property. If you do, he may legally break in if he needs lawful access and bill you for the cost of entry and any resulting repairs. In some jurisdictions that can be used as a basis to evict you. NEVER give a LL ammunition that he can use against you! That can turn you from plaintiff to defendant and you never want to have to go on the defense here. |

Try putting a paperclip in the doorjamb. Then, you'll know if someone entered.
If you find someone has entered, then go through the expense of a CCTV (preferably motion sensing so you don't have to go through hours of footage.)
Landlords are allowed to enter, but they are supposed to let you know beforehand, if not it must be an emergency. Either way, make sure someone IS entering first, then tape it and nail the bastard. |

you're landlord is not allowed in your house unless he/she has given 24 hours notice. They cannot just come in whenever they want NO MATTER WHAT! i've rented plenty of houses/apartments and know this for a fact.
In my opinion i would call my landlord and say "it seems like someone has been breaking into my house, will you install a new lock if i go buy it" see what he/she says.
If they say.. oh that was me. then tell them how illegal it is and threaten to take them to court. OR install a dead bolt (spelling?) yourself and see where that gets you/ |

Change the lock mechanism - just buy the inside part of the lock which comes with new keys. He will not notice this unless he tries to unlock it. Wait for him to say something and then point out that you would appreciate some notice of when he is coming into the property. Get some advice from a housing association on the actual wording of the law which stops him just walking in on you.
If he makes a fuss about changing the locks, a little white lie - you lost your bag which also had your address in it, meaning it was a security risk.
I always change the locks when I move in - I don't know how many keys have been given out to previous tennants etc. but I know that many GOOD landlords (few and far between!) automatically change locks with a change of tenant! |

Stick a piece of sellotape between the door and door jam, slightly nick the tape top and bottom so it breaks nice when the doors opened.(dont put it at eye level or by the handle or it will be seen) That will tell you if someone's been in??
Draws etc pull all your draws slightly out by 2mm, if someone looks through them they will shut them all the way home you see.
Need anymore tips on specifics mail me. |

Yes. Set up a camera to watch your door. If he's doing it, then call the police and give them the video.
A good webcam will have software that will record only when there's movement.
Personally, I would try to trick him into believing that I am not there and hide and wait. |

the mat sellotape sounds to 007 but is the cheapest by far to start off with don't change the lock as he could take action on this, if the tape is broken on ur return then yes go for the next stage, if he is going into you're flat when you are not there you have a good case, i hope this is not the case as that is an awful violation, but if he is get the creep on camera, good luck x |

Is it a Boy? Is it a Girl?

oh my god thats terrible!! And freaky...
I would set up a camera, but obviously if thats too expensive, what about a webcam? Do you have one that you can leave on all day? Otherwise, leave specific things in certain places to test, put cello tape on doors to see if they have been opened... or you could just call him and give him a gentle reminder that if he needs to use the flat he needs to give you 24 hours written notice... |

Get some Matt sellotape and stick hairs across various items. Check when you get home to see if they are broken. |

Change the locks, the a**hole can only legally enter the property if you are present. Get in touch with citizens advice for info to sort the creep. |

If someone is snooping through your things, I would hire a PI (private investgator), It is againt the law for your landlord to invade your property without your permission. |

That happened on the Oprah show to someone. If you do not want to buy a camera or go through all of that mess, then do what the girl on Oprah did, she put a shirt infront of the door and when she came home it was all the way against the wall, which ment someone had opened the door. Then if you want to go on to the camera, but make sure he can not see it. |

other then setting up a hidden camera, I don't know what to tell you.
What has made you think he is doing this? |

Borrow a camera, hide it in the bookshelf, hopefully pointed at the door he would use. How creepy. Judge Judy got pretty steamed when she ruled over one of these cases.
as for changing locks or adding locks that is against any standard lease and you might be in violation of your lease. |

If you can't prove it, you've got nothing. If you can prove it you can bring tresspassing charges against him. |

There's alarms you can get, that are loud and just hang on the door knobs (or windows). Hardware stores, such as "Ace" have them (a friend bought some, for same reason!). Or if you want to go a step further, you can get relatively cheap little spy cameras, that you hook up to your computer (hide them somewhere). I know Sam's Club has one, around $40, and there all these "spy stores" opening up--a few near me, but you can find on internet too. |

I would change the locks or add an additional one if possible |
