I'm looking to move down south. I need suggestions and/or recommendations for which city to move to?
Hello,

I am currently a resident of Buffalo, NY. I have about a year and a half of school left (I'm in grad school).

Anyway, 27 years of cold weather, high taxes, and a stangnant local economy have convinced me that I want to move to a southern city when I graduate. I have neve been down south nor do I know anyone who lives there, so it will certainly be a big life change, but it's something I really want to do.

Here's a list of cities that I've heard some good things about:
Nashville, TN
Memphis, TN
Jackson, MS
Atlanta, GA
Charleston, SC
Columbia, SC
Charlotte, NC
Raleigh, NC

Does anyone have any suggestion or other information for me?

Obviously I'm not going to make a hugh life decision based off of information from Yahoo Answers, I'm just looking for some preliminary inforation from people who are familiar with these cites such as crime rates, how the people are, how the local economy is, etc.

Thank you all very much!!!

Do some investigation on http://www.bestplaces.net

There is some good info on the census website too.

This is a long shot, but try checking out some local blogs, or the rants and raves sections of cities you are considering of http://www.craigslist.org - those people will gripe about whatever is going on in that particular city.

I've been to Buffalo a number of times, can't say that I blame you for checking out your options. You might miss authentic Buffalo wings, take recipes with you.

Atlanta, Raleigh, Memphis, and you left out Savannah, GA are all good bets. Columbia is an armpit. Charlotte has a crumbling socio-economic structure. Jackson is, well it's in MS, leave it at that. Charleston has eliminated the middle class. Nashville is...well it's okay. It'd be the bottom of the good list, though.

I own properties in Raleigh and ATL, and visit regularly. Raleigh still has a good RE market (so not many bargains) and ATL will be one of the first to recover. I'm workin with my Realtor there to look for some more investment properties for me, because the deals are good and the investment will appreciate faster then in other cities.

Fayetteville, Arkansas is a small city with quaint character. It is also the home of the University of Arkansas. It's in the foothills of the Ozarks, close to lakes and parks, with all sorts of cultural advantages. There is a low crime rate, full employment and easy access to places like Tulsa, Hot Springs, Little Rock and Branson. You would never be bored.

My fiance and I just moved to Raleigh from Michigan, where the economy was terrible!!!! We moved in Aug/Sept. and LOVE it here so far. The weather has been amazing and the place is booming! There is subdivisions going up left and right and tons of things to do, places to go, stores and new complexes being built everywhere. It is definitly anything but stagnate! There is a lot of traffic but you get use to it! We even found things to do down here like rock climbing that we didn't get to up north. Some of the lingo is a little different like soda instead of pop and what not but it still has some northern qualities to it, so it helped make the transition smoother.

Good luck in finiding the place that's right for you!

cartersville georgia. its near atlanta... it has great shopping and restaurants...lots of places to work but its not like living in a big city. plus the cost of living isnt that high. theres lots of nice people. i used to live there but moved north to the cold to be with my husband. id go back if i could but family is here.

ATLANTA..hells ya! come here its awesome haha

I'd say it depends on if you are looking to live in a city or out in the country.

As for GA, I'd say look into Cobb and Cherokee counties. They are just north of Atlanta. Cherokee use to be thought of as out in the country but there is a lot of growth. Cobb is busy but a nice county. I've lived in GA for all but 4 years of my life. I like the fact that we don't often get snow but when we do most of the place gets shut down. *grins* You still get the seasonal changes here but we don't get that bone chilling cold like ya'll do in NY.

Good luck on your search.

ok well i would suggest san antonio tx and reason being there are alot of jobs here and they have benefits where most does not. it would be worth you coming to this city and see. its got bus service, it has all the comforts of home from NY. its in the south and not snow here and its cool to cold once in awhile but only nov to march about mar is windy and if we have winter couldb e feb but not long its hardly called winter i miss the north and move to michigan soon but you cna hav ethis place. houses are cheap right now and you can rent or buy its ok and the food and all th e stuff is cheaper down here also.
