Christina <333 | I'm moving into my first apartment? Any important things I should know? ? |
Also how does utilities work? I pay the apartment place or do i have to go through the heat, water, and internet people? |

Take pictures of the apartment prior to moving in (specifically any damage or flaws). That way when you move out you should receive your security deposit back (assuming you didn't cause any additional damage).
More than likely, water/sewer/trash will be provided. You will have to set up electric/cable/internet/phone in your own name. It may take a few days so call in advance so you can schedule it the day you move in.
Congratulations on your 1st apartment! |

Do you already have an apartment lease signed or are you just starting to look?
The answers will be very different....depending upon your response. |

Read your lease; remember that this is a BINDING legal document and you need to know what it says. This document will govern what you pay and to whom, and also how to end this arrangement. Please have someone who you consider knowledgeable review this document so that you understand you rights and responsibilities as relates to this rental. Good luck! And please try to be a good neighbor to those living around you--you can reap a ton of benefits by having people who like and trust you in close proximity. |

As was stated, utilities are governed by your lease agreement. Make sure to save a few hundred dollars for deposits, along with apartment rent and deposit, because being a first time utilities holder oftentimes means you pay higher deposits.
Utilities you may have to pay... Water, electricity, trash fee, heat... then additional costs for things like phone, internet, cable, and any other extras. Generally, unless specifically stated otherwise, you will have to arrange accounts with each company. Also, FYI, if getting cable for anything, check with your landlord/company to see who provides their cable service. If they provide it, great, but most places don't. When setting up, the cable company will most likely need to do an installation and/or on-site activation, which you will need to tell your building manager about so that they can access cable boxes in the building if necessary.
Save every penny you can for the first few months!!! Try to keep down going out and movies and frivolous spending until you get into a routine. Throw a housewarming so that people will give you some of the things you will need hehe... Keep a change jar. Have a regular place to set your keys every day so you don't lock yourself out.
BUY A PLUNGER
Wait a bit before decking out the place... Interior decorating is fun and exciting, but it's not necessary and it's very expensive, and you can burn through what you've saved easily by trying to make your apartment "cute" or whatever.
Oh yeah, and it's a good idea to clean the place before settling in completely.
It's a big responsibility but it's a good time, take it slow so you don't fall on your booty and you'll be fine. |

As far as utilities, you will need to check your lease. Your lease is your bible. Everything should be clearly written there in case you have issues later on. Also, don't forget to take photos of the place before you move in. That way, they can't say you damaged something that may already be damaged in the beginning. Protect yourself. Your building management may be nice to you - they should since they will be making money off of you in the next year; but don't forget - this is business. CYA - cover your @$$ all the time!!! Good luck to you and congratulations! |

Make sure you save at least $200 for the first grocery shopping, extra appliances, and/or household items you dont have now. When my husband and I moved from my dad's house in a this condo the first trip to Walmart was over $400. We had to buy a microwave, household items like dishes/pot/pans, mop/broom, cleaning products, and a bunch of groceries! Lol |

Hi,
Congratulations on your first apartment.
Check with the Apartment manager or rental agent to see who is responsible for the utilities.
Any utilities that you are responsible for will most likely require a deposit of some kind, which they normally hold for a year and then credit your account after that time period has expired.
The MOST, MOST IMPORTANT thing to do.....Insist on completing a "Move In Inspection" report before you move even one thing into the apartment.
Make sure a notation is made for every scratch or scrape, ding or hole (including picture hangers) in every room. If there is loose tile anyplace make sure it's written down, if a broiler pan for the oven, or ice cube trays for the freezer are supposed to be there and are missing, make sure it's written down as missing.
ASK questions as to what is and isn't included.
Too many people make the mistake of not doing Move In inspections, then are surprised when their security deposit isn't returned to them when they move, and they are sent a "cleaning and repair" bill for things that were broken before they even moved in.
Good Luck in your first place. |

I just went through allll that crap. My first apartment as well. Let me tell you something, when visiting apartments (if you haven't found yours yet) look HARD! Look behind the doors, in the corners, move objects that could be covering up something (especially in closets!!) and this may sound silly, but bring a small alarm clock or any electronic and plug it into every plug you see (my apartment is BRAND NEW and has half the plugs NOT working!!).
I pay my rent and water bill at my apartment office, but all my other utilities I pay online.
Check with the elasing office, they usually provide you with a list of all the utilities companies that work for them. =)
Good luck!!!!
P.S.: CHECK THE KITCHEN HARD-CORE! When me and my roommate moved in we had the joy of ANTS in there. Ugh! |

As you know you have to coordinate all your things as you move to a new house. The post address you have to change by contact parties related to you. |
