There's nothing wrong with getting paid in cash. However, if you don't give Uncle Sam his share at the end of the year that's when you're screwed.

Your employer should give you a 1099 (paid w/o tax withholding) or a W2.

I imagine that your landlord will just want to verify employment, perhaps salary... but he shouldn't care if you're 1099 or W2.

He may do a credit check though.

Ted
You will probably have to deposit a significant amount of cash "under the table" to get an apartment manager to work with you.

edit: People an SIN number is Canadian equivalent of SSN. This person appears to be in Canada.

Get a SOCIAL INSURANCE NUMBER a.s.a.p.
It is illegal to get paid under the table.
It only takes one person to report you to the authorities.
The Canada Government does not like to be fooled. And you will pay a lot of taxes.

SS #'s are free, just apply. 1-800-772-1213
The IRS doesn't like it when you spend more money than you make.

if you mean you don't have a social security # then you are illegal aliens. You can't be born in the US and not have one - maybe you just don't know it and need to talk to your parents.

and another answerer is right - getting paid under the table will just cause you big problems with the IRS and is never a good idea.

it is sounding like maybe you are not old enough or ready to be on your own yet.

Ethan
It depends on the land owner.

Megan Z
This is something you will have to discuss with the people that will rent to you!!! It is different with every landlord!!

Trouble
If you are paid "under the table" there is no way for the landlord to verify either of your incomes, verify your work history, etc...

A landlord would have to be insane to rent to you and your boyfriend.

You are both a huge risk and uncollectable in the landlords eyes.
