TRICKSLED | I WANT TO START a PROFITABLE FARM ON 10 ACRES!? |
Im a 26 yr. old dedicated to seeing my dream come true. I currently live in Northwest Indiana and want to stay here in the area. Ive been trying to find out what breaks are out there for farmers, i.e. land, loans, taxes. I have $150k to start with. My idea was putting livestock on the property but im trying to find out what is the most profitable choice. Any information would be great! |

DC is right, grow corn. That's what I would do. They are making ethanol (diesel) from corn. Another idea,,,,,a fish camp or RV camp with a huge pond for people to fish in. Good Luck.
You could always develop the land into a subdivision. with 10 acres you could sell off parcels, having 20 half acre parcels. You would need to develop the land, put in your underground, electric, water. The parcels would probably have septic systems, which would be the buyers responsibility. You would have to develop the roads as well.
Greenhouses with starter plants |

Pot Plants....but no grants for that one...but by far the most profitable. |

10 acres is not a lot to try raising livestock on a large scale but i have been considering goats. with the growing latino and middle eastern population i think this could be a money maker. many other cultures eat goat and they are not hard to keep if you build a fence that will hold them. |

Be cautious while you are getting experience - with the best intention and ability in the world you could make beginers mistakes that could cost you plenty of hard to regain money - eg plowing borrowed money into something that doesnt take off due to the fact you are learning - good bye money. If you havent already I would read and study the book 'seven habits of highly effective people' to help get your head and attitudes in the right place. If you had cattle you wouldnt make too much on 10 acres, but on the other hand they could be easilly turned into cash if need be. To make money on small acreage I think you would need to consider something intensive - eg growing flowers in a glasshouse, pigs, even, if the land and area are attractive, a cabin for paying tourists to stay at. The key, at your stage, in my opinion, is to scrounge for everything you need as cheaply as possible, and do all of the construction work yourself. As I say I think you would be a lot wiser and have better judgement to take succesfully the next step once you have this experience, but risk as little money as possible while you are getting it. |

Well what experience do you have with farming? I would seriously consider trying to do as much as you can with what you have and not look to the government. 10 acres is not a large farm and livestock can eat it up quickly. You might want to consider smaller animals, possibly free range chickens. A lot of folks want to get away from the store bought, hormone pumped chickens. Eggs as a by product |

Livestock on 10 acres? That has to be a typo. Try wine grapes. You don't need to make the wine. You just have a contract with a winery to sell a specific type of grapes to them. |

Vegetable Garden. I don't know what the produce regulations are in the US, but a vegetable garden is likely the most profitable way to go with a plot of land that is less that 50 acres. If you're capable, deal direct to local grocers and customers, cutting out the middle-man will really increasing your profit margin in the agricultural game. It would mean a lot more work, but by removing large machinery such as tractors, implements and harvesting equipment (10 acre vegetable could be serviced by a single garden tractor with a PTO hook-up) you remove the major overhead costs involved in farming. In addition, by growing a garden(with several different plant varieties), it allows you to rotate what's being grown where (last year's potato patch can be this year's carrot patch and next years squash patch), making it more difficult for plant disease to take hold in your operation, and reducing your dependence on this like spray and fertilizer. Such an operation would also allow for you to raise small livestock, such as chickens or a few head of pork, in addition to the produce you'll pull off the land. Of course, it all depends on how much time you have to spare on this project. |
