Hi
The amount of housing benefit payable depends on a number of factors such as how much you earn, how much is the rent, is the rent a fair rent.
To work out if you can have any housing benefit paid to you then this is how the council work it out.
The base figure is £64.15 (adult JSA figure plus £5). For every pound you earn over this amount you lose 65p from your housing benefit entitlement.
As you say you earn about £16,000 this equates to about £250 per wk take home. Therefore to be entitled to any housing benefit the weekly rent of the property would have to be over about £125.
I know it sounds confusing, its because it is!!! Councils are not easy people to deal with!!! Dont forget to apply for Working Family Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Child Allowance, to name but three.
Hope this helps and good luck

It's possible that you may get a little bit of help here. It depends on what savings you have, how much tax credits you receive and of course what type of property you rent and what rent is charged. Fair rents are set by the rent officer and may be restricted on his advice. Also, you should only rent accommodation appropriate to your needs and not above ....i.e. two bedrooms etc. The best bet is to assess local rents and phone up your local council benefits section for telephone advice. They should give you a definative answer. You could also apply for a pre-tenancy determination via your local council which will tell you exactly how much rent they will consider on a particular property. Also, many local councils have 'on-line' benefit calculators that can be remarkably accurate if you input the correct information. Make sure that the child benefit is in your name as well as this will give you a premium for your son on the benefit calculation. You will also need to declare what maintenance your husband will be paying, if any. While tax credits will ignore this, housing benefit regard maintenance as income. Good luck ! |

I doubt it? I only get £15 housing benefit a week and I'm in council housing. To explain, I don't work, so should be entitled to full benefit as I'm on income Support, but my daughter works and lives with me, so she's stuck paying it! She only earns £250 a week. Unless you're on benefits and your son is still in full time education, I, personally don't think so? You could try claiming Family Credit? Don't have dependant kids so don't know but I've heard its there for people with kids. It's worth a go. Good luck! |

I dont know but try to claim tax credits as a single parent. Then the council may consider help with your rent.
Good luck |

No afraid not. You are entitled to Working Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits as you son is still in full time education. It's worth having so apply asap. Plus has you son applied for EMA, I'm not 100% on this but it is worth looking in to. |

You can go to your local council offices and ask then to look into it properly. Then you will get a correct assessment.
Also you can inquire about houses available for rent from the Council |

your income will stop any benefit being considered !so cant you stop just where you are at the moment and lead separate lives until the time comes for you to see your way out of this but anyway your husband should be chipping in here so take advice !!your son has another year to go before your husbands support for him finishes/// |

You may have a small amount of rebate but not much. You MAY also be entitled to some working tax credit also, good luck. |

I don't know for sure., You should contact your local Advice Centre who will be able to give you information on all sorts of benefits - and their help is free.
Good luck to you. |
