I am having an apartment inspection tomorrow, and i was wondering what they were allowed to inspect?
Are they allowed to open up my closets? What are they allowed to go through if anything? I thought that they were just allowed to look at things that are in plain view.
Additional Details
They posted a notice on my door saying that they are inspecting buildings 2-16, even buildings only. I just said that it ws time for the monthly inspection, but this is the first time in 6 months

Why are you having an apartment inspection?

LE
I think it really depends on what state you live in and if there are any local codes. California is very strict about those things.

Generally, they just look at things like the walls, heater/ac, faucets, tubs and make sure the place is not overrun with roaches/vermin. They may go into a closet if they believe there is water damage.

I'd be there for the inspection if I were you. They may open the closet, but they shouldn't rummage thru your stuff. If you don't trust the Landlord, or if you have a crazy landlord, make sure you follow them thru the house.

That way, they won't go too far.

they will just look at the BASIC things , like condition of walls and appliance.they wont go into closets.they wont go into cabinets either.

When my apartment gets inspected they don't go through my closet - they're only allowed check things out like the bathroom, kitchen and to see if the bedroom is tidy & nothing is broken. At most they'll open your fridge or oven.

hetshepsut
It depends on the type of inspection. The yearly Federal inspection for safety usually open up all of your closets, (but not usually your cabinets) but they won't go through your drawers or laundry baskets or anything. They don't mess with your personal stuff or shove your clothes around but they may:

look in your refridgerator
check all closets
check your smoke detectors (and set them off some times)
check your air-filter/AC
check your windows and screens
check the seal around each door
check your plumbing
make sure the apartment is clean-ish (not an environment favorable to vermine)
check your hot-water heater
check to make sure windows and doors are not blocked (for fire-safety)

And that's about it. :) Hope this helps. If you have anything you don't want them to find, you may want to put it in your dresser-drawers and cover them up. If you have pets you're not supposed to have, you may want to arrange for them to be out of the apartment (along with evidence of them...)

I hope this helped.

Not true.

Under your cabinets, is plumbing...that isn't in plain view and they have a right to inspect it.
Outside storage facilities.
All electrical outlets...so they may have to move furniture to see them..they are looking for signs of "hot spots", which can indicate an electrical problem.
All light fixutres.
The sink and all applicances...don't be suprised if they need to pull them out.
Water heater....if you have one.

What I do with my properties, is that I usually give about a 2-week notice of when inspectors will come and ask that residents pull furniture from the walls about 6"...all you have to do is be able to shine a flashlight behind it.

They could care less what you keep in you drawers...don't get paranoid about it.

These people have alot of properties to go through and yours won't be anything special.

acertech
they can look at anything superficially, walls, floors, doors.... they need your permission e to open closets. what are you planning to launch everything in a closet?

meg420c
Normally, (i just had my inspection) they check to make sure your water heater isn't being blocked, your appliances are all in working order, your lighting and outlets are in working order, your fire alarms must be working. Anything, really, that can leave your apartment complex liability if something were to happen. They shouldn't be ''snooping'' through your closets, etc.

If it's about an inspection from the leasing office (you are a tenanat) they basically inspect the fire sprinklers, they see you dont't have nothing obstructing them, they inspect you are not using the heater and furnace compartments to storage your stuff, in general, they arelooking for possible hazards.

linz_b
i think they check to make sure there aren't any cracks on the wall, your faucet isn't leaking, no mold on the walls/ceilings, your carpet doesn't need replacing...you know all the stuff your landlord is supposed to take care of

smedrik
they mostly just look around make sure there is no visible damage and that all the fixtures are intact.

They will also check for general tidiness. If the environment is an environmental risk (hospitable to vermin or vermin infested)
The will check windows, doors to ensure they are working and not in violation of fire codes.

They will check the smoke detector.
They make check, oven fridge, stove and dishwasher to ensure they are maintained.
They will check water pressure, taps and all pluming fixtures.

They will also generally have a city inspector there who will check to make sure everything is up to date with the local building code.

they may open closets if there are pipes, wires, lighting or any other fixtures on or in the closet.
