I am looking to rent a house. is it right that a landlord can ask for a bond up to 1 month before moving in?
in my current rental i need to give 1 months notice. before my prospective new landlord can secure the house for me he needs the admin fee plus a full bond.

He can ask for what he wants (within the law), your right is to tell him to stick it.
So you have a choice, pay him, or go elsewhere.

Yes, absolutely normal.

Actually, now, lot of landlord are even pushing for 6 weeks deposit if you pay your rent monthly.

So, before you move in one month rent in advance + the deposit.

In some countries, it can be up to 6 months !!! (how crazy is that)

Back to your question, yes, totally normal.

If you want him to stop looking for a renter and rent to you, you will need to put up a deposit.

You can't expect him to hold it without any assurance you will actually be moving in.

Bardic
Quite normal.

whatever you agree to you have to do. . . .that's what a lease is. . . .

it is standard, a LL will not HOLD the house for you unless you give him a security deposit or bond. . . .otherwise you may never show up and he has an empty house on his hands

I ask for the security deposit plus the last months rent plus the first months rent. Diffferent landlords have different requirements.

new nanna
It's so the property can be reserved for you and you don't back out at the last minute, leaving him with no tenant and having to waste time looking for another. If you dont want to pay it, look for something else, but the landlord needs to know where he stands.

Moe AFG
He can, but you can refuse

doinou
Absolutely. If you should default, it will cost the landlord more than a month's rent.
