ashley | I am moving into an apartment with another girl. How do we decide who gets the bigger room.? |
We will both pay exactly the same rate. I am in my junior year at college and she is in her freshman year. Both of us would obviously like to have the larger room. I don't want there to be problems. We are trying to figure out a fair way to decide. I would rather have it be something other than picking straws..How can we decide fairly? |

Whose name is on the lease? If only one of you is named, then they should have the bigger room. Or come up with a compromise like: since one is getting the bigger room, then whoever gets it could be responsible for the security deposit, an extra bill, more of the chores or something like that. What ever you do, get everything in writing that is signed by both of you! |

Let one person decide how to make the larger room a higher proportion of apartment cost, and the other person chooses which room to take (accepting the cost structure that the other person set). This is the equivalent of having one person cut a piece of food in half and the other person choosing which half to get.
It is not fair to pay the same rate for both rooms when one is larger than the other, even if you decided it by a coin toss. It will be unfair because "chance" is not fair. Chance is simply arbitrary and it will be unfair to the loser and can generate some justified resentment.
If you decide that the larger room is worth 50 bucks a month more than the smaller room, then your room-mate gets to choose whether to take the larger or smaller room and agrees to the rent difference - either a discount of 25 bucks from your original cost if she chooses the smaller room, or a premium of 25 bucks if she chooses the larger room.
This will be inherently fair. |

I agree with Lisa L (first answer). Measure both rooms, biggest room=biggest rent
Since both of you are girls, do you have only 1 bathroom? May be the the one with the smaller bedroom can have priority using the bath. But this will add more tension ... |

Without one paying more I cannot see a fair way. Does one have more furniture & electronics to share than the other? Seniority would be the only other way without a coin toss, but is that fair? |

all the above answers are good, but one not mentioned is the one that did most of the leg work. and also the one which is probably the most picky. LOL
Girls are fun to rent to, Some will do everything they can to get along with a roommate while others think the roommate has to give in on all the BIG issues.
Maybe the one that is the largest should get it. while the smaller of the two can get by with the littler room, But then again what is the boyfriend situation?? Who's boyfriend is to be there the most??
The best way that my girls have done it in the past is to divide it 6 months change rooms, Be surprised how this stops any feuds and not a lot of them actually change rooms. |

well in my place whoever has the smallest room had dibs on
living room space. we still use it sometimes of coarse but if they are hanging out there we give him his space we also let him have dibs on closets located in different spots of the house for storage. or sit down and logically discuss who would the bigger room be better for like someone who stays up really late at night it might be better if they have the bigger room then they can just keep it in their room and not distract you with noise. who is going to have more guests over such as boyfriends or whatever. |

Measure the rooms by square footage, work out the difference and put a proportional price on it. Assuming you're both in a similar financial situation (i.e. it's not that one of you has daddy paying for everything) then it will work our from which one of you is willing to stump up the cash.
Although, It's clear from the fact that you've posted this question that you think you have equal entitlement (or it would not have got this far) so perhaps try to look at what you can both offer to the place; maybe one of you has something that benefits all like a TV for the living room or similar. |

can you switch rooms every three months or whatever would wok out fairly? That way you boyh get a turn, or Put a devider of sorts to make the large room equal to the small one and use the leftover space in there as joint storage for the both of you |

Since you are paying the same rate, perhaps you could give the one getting the bigger room more responsibility. Like making sure any bills that you are both responsible for get paid on time. Collecting from the other person etc. Or making plan for the housework and making sure it gets done. Maybe you could switch rooms midway through the year. I suggest that you agree on how it will be decided and really try to get along. It will be in your best interest. |

you can be the GIVER or the taker. or you can both sleep in the same bed and have a spare. or you can arm wrestle for it.
or you can say the one with the biggest brests needs more room. or you can change rooms every two weeks, or month.
or......or.....or....or. |

1) Get a web cam.
2) Mud wrestle for the room.
3) Charge people $5.00 to vote on who gets the room.
4) Take the money and go rent a bigger apartment. |
