Be very careful who you room with. Pick someone stable both economically and emotionally.
The dorms at least solve the cooking problems. You would be surprised at how much time goes into shopping and preparing food.
Budget your money. The food on campus may not be great but it is a stable expense. You will not have highs and lows.
Decide how much you can spend on entertainment. Keep it as low as possible. Usually there are cheaper movies and stuff on campus to do--you don't need to go elsewhere.
You need to spend time EVERY DAY for study. A minimum of 15 minutes PER CLASS no matter what. Cramming is stupid and doesn't work.
Cell phones are another big expense. Get the cheapest plan possible and stick with it. You don't need to do all that texting, ect.
Sit down and see what the expenses are likely to be. Talk to the school guidance counselor and your parents.
Tuition
Books
Clothing
Food
Laundry
Entertainment
Phone
Room
Travel Expenses
Lab Fees
Misc.
Good luck. Would you believe I paid for my first year of college with the $1800 I had saved up for babysitting. That was back in 1970 when babysitting paid 50 cents an hour. |

If you are going to college in September, you should fill out the FAFSA (free application for Federal Student Aid) after January 1, 2008. Fill out the form for 2008/09 You may be eligible for gift aid and will be eligible for Stafford Student Loans. The site is www(dot)fafsa(dot)ed(dot)gov. Other sites will charge you for what should be free. Also, make sure you apply to your college early and have your high school transcripts sent to the college. See an advisor or counselor at the college also. They will be the best guide for your future at school. Good Luck! |

I just went through this... the best way to not spend all of your money is to just try to have fun with what there is to do ON campus. You can avoid lots of nights out by just getting INVOLVED on campus and staying busy. That is good advice for almost everything.. saving money.. making good long lasting friendships...not missing home...and getting the contacts you will need to help you along your way.. and just being out and about will also help to keep you informed on what is going on around campus. BEST OF LUCK! |

let's start very basic, your income has to be more than your expenses, or, you are going to go broke. Try listing all your known expenses, mark envelopes for each and place the payment amount in each one, when they are due, extract the money, pay the bill, and put the money in for the next billing date. Try to have one for frivolous spending (so you won't feel so stressed). |

Okay, well make sure that you bring toiletries of your own! My sis made the mistake of trying to share with her room mate and it didn't go over too well. Also, remember that college is a time for balancing social life with studies and work. Get a job, but make sure that it doens't interfere with your studies. And when your at the store, ask yourself, do I really need this? We have come to depend on our parents to get us stuff, but if we blow all our money on dumb stuff like ten sweaters and everything like that, how are we gonna buy stuff we need, like food? This seems dramatic, but you really need to think about stuff like that. That's how it goes. My mom always told me that for every hour in class, you need two hours to study and do homework for that class, but you can mold that idea into your own if you like. I really hope this helps and I wish you luck!! :D |

I did that in 1949, but I had a job waiting for me. All I can do Is wish you luck. If you're strapped for cash, don't let a frat rush you as that will involve expenses you can avoid. It's nice to get that pin but its better to assure getting that sheepskin. There are nice old houses all around the campus --rent a room -- if you don't want to put up with all the crap of a dorm. LUCK! |

Well...you can always get a job on campus, they usually have many positions open, even work study jobs where you can basically just read most of the time you're there like at the libraries...but apply as early as you can because the good ones go quick and you'll get stuck in a cafeteria or something.
Also, try to be as open and extroverted as possible, make as many friends as possible, and keep your attitude positive. It will attract more people and you will make many more friends versus being introverted and cynical.
Another good tip for saving money is to buy your books early, online. You can get most of them for less than half of what they sell them for at the bookstore, some used ones even less! Check Half.com. |

You have to make a budget within a week of being there and follow it strictly. Do allow yourself a little bit of extra spending money, but leave that as a separate account, such as "miscellaneous" or "treating myself" accounts. Also, you will need quite a lot of money for deposits, electricity deposit, cable deposit, apartment deposit, first mont's rent...all of these things unless you are moving into a dorm. Always budget money for emergency--about 10% of your income a month works out quite nicely. Make sure that you are shopping wisely, comparing prices, namebrand shopping, and the like, at least until you get the hang of your expenses.
Good luck, it's always a fantastic experience to move out for the first time. You are going to hit bumps in the road, but just remember to learn from those so that you can make sure to miss them next time around. It's good that you are taking the time to research what needs to be done you should do just fine starting out. |
