I am new at this "rent"ing business. When the LANDLORD says they charge for electricity, what does it mean?
Do I have to turn off all the lights? (before the bulbs run out?)
Should I unplug the microwave? (the digital clock runs the microwave.)
What about the oven then? I didn't tell my landlord that I want it on. I can't cook. I think I only look at the clock! Well, I can make oatmeals...but that doesn't count!
Do I have to worry about the restroom fan that goes on when I hop into the shower?
Should I TURN OFF the computer instead of putting it on STAND-BY?

I'm CHEAP AND CHEERFUL! Anybody else?

This is my first apartment and I wanted to becareful. This is at an apartment.

THANK YOU, everybody!! I'm not YOUNG, I'm a 31 year old new renter with a Traumatic Brain Injury!

This is my first apartment because when I was 25, I was busy working and partying and apartment-sitting and riding my motorcycle!!

I unfortunately had a motorcycle accident almost 6 years ago!

Because of my TBI, everything is new and confusing! I want all the help that I can get.

Thank you, again!!

You will pay for what you use.

Basically, you should conserve energy to cut the cost, as well as help the environment. You can keep your stove, microwave and fridge plugged in all the time, same with any alarm clocks. They are fairly necessary items.

** If you honestly do not use it at all, then do unplug it.. as it will just drain the electricity for no reason. I don't know where people get the idea that it doesn't use electricity when something is plugged into a live electrical socket.

You should turn off lights in any rooms you aren't using, and don't leave the tv or radio on if you are leaving the room for more than a few minutes. Also, switch to energy efficient light bulbs.. they cost a bit more than regular, but you end up saving money on bills, and are actually brighter than regular ones. Turn off your computer if you are not going to be using it for a few hours. If the restroom fan is turned on when you flick a light switch, it does use electricity.

Good luck in your first apartment!

The landlord gets a bill for the entire structure, usually broken down by unit, and he's got to pay it out of his money, then he in turn goes to you, says this is what your bill was, pay me.

But that's not how most places are out there, the bill goes to the renter directly and you pay the electric company yourself.

Leave your stuff plugged in, see what the first month's bill comes to, and budget for it accordingly. If you want to save money, unscrew all the standard lightbulbs and get those efficient ones that look like coiled white tubes. They turn on dim, but go to full strength in less than a minute and draw less than 1/4 the power of a standard bulb AND last longer. They work in any socket except for lights that are 3-way or that have a dimmer switch.

The air conditioning is the biggest electrical draw.

The landlord charges for electric or will a bill come to you? If this is an apartment building and you don't have your own electric meter your going to be fighting a loosing battle. I've paid my own electric for years and save a few ways. Others aren't worth the trouble.
If your microwave has a digital clock it would be a pain to reset that every time you wanted to use the oven. The oven doesn't use electric unless you turn it on. You can save by not pre-heating unless you are baking where the temperature has to be just so. I never pre-heat to start a roast or meatloaf or even pizza. Keep running the fan when you shower. If you don't you'll end up with moisture all over and it could cause mold.Yes, quit using the stand-by on your computer. Run only full loads on a clothes washer or dishwasher. Keep an eye on clothes when they are drying and get them out as soon as they are dry. Keep the lights off in rooms you aren't using. If you heat with electric or if it's a gas furnace that has an electric blower, keep the heat as low as you can and still be comfortable. Use those funny looking light bulbs that are in vouge right now. I started using them in just seven different lamps and saved $6 the first month. You'll think of other ways to save yourself. Nothing wrong with being cheap or cheerful.

It means you pay your own electric bill. Which also means that you need to call the electric company and establish service.

The landlord is not clarifying whether the apartment is "Electricity furnished" or "Electricity is not furnished." Most apartments have individual electric meters and the bill is sent to the lessee (renter). If your apartment does not have an individual meter, there is no way the landlord can determine how much power your apartment is using. It sounds like there is only one meter for all the apartments/rooms and they are dividing the bill among all the renters. This is illegal in most cities and states. Locate the Office of Rental Regulations and check with them on what your landlord said. I don't mean that you have to make trouble for your landlord, only that you want a clarification at to his/her statement.

First, relax about the electricity thing. At least 50% of your electricity bill comes from an air conditioning system. So if you are trying to cut back, keep your thermostat high. You don't have to turn the lights out when you are using them, just be cautious not overly cautious as you seem to be. Don't worry about unplugging things, that is not necessary...it uses such a small amount of electricity.

In an apartment they usually take the large sum of the electricity, average it out betweenall tenants. If you know you don't use a lot of electricity, doesn't reslly matter because Ken and Barbie next door could be using the most out of all tenants, it is still going to be averaged out evenly. If you are still unclear, clarify it with your landlord so there is not an issue because the next thing you know, you will have a huge debt, no apartment and probably in small claims court with a smartass judge and your "freedom" from parent's will be gone.

This depends- If its a common shared residence, like they live in part of it and you live in the other part... they will usually pro-rate it based on historical bills. So, if the bill is 100$ a month wih the apt. empty then you move in and the bill goes up to 150, then you would be billed 50 bucks. My theory on utilities is that if I work, then I want to be comfortable. Use the lites! Boil water! Don't unplug anything! BUT, be moderate. Insist on seeing the bills, and ask for a reciept stating the mount and the bill period. Utilities are usually billed on 30 day cycles. Good luck on the apartment! Horray!

This means you should conserve electricity as well as can be expected. You can keep your microwave plugged in and your fan in the bathroom but shut off the things you do not need when not in use. Your landlord must keep records of what he is charging you. Your electricity must be on your own meter and you are reimbursing him for the use that you actually used.

sounds like your young........no this just means your responsible for the electric bill,,,whatever you use you will pay for.

you will have to use certain things........but the bulbs won't run out.......duh.......you can leave the microwave on....things don't use electricity unless you are using them......the clock on it won't take much.
turning off your computer is your option. Your landlord knows you want the electric on.......duh!
the oven will be on when you turn it on...
don't you have parents who told you these things??
