I can't help feeling bitter about this.....?
My advice to anyone leaving school and considering going to University is this - Do not attend University, become a drug addict instead.
I went to Uni, got an hons degree, couldn't find a job in my chosen subject so now work in a low paid job.

My wages are £800 a month, my rent is £500 and monthly bills are around £200 (council tax, phone, electricity etc). This leaves me £100 approx a month to live on which isn't much. I'm not eligible for any benefits apparently, and i went to see about getting a council flat without any joy as i'm not "a priority case." There are new flats being built near where i live, and when i enquired about those, I was told they are for drug addicts and foreign people. Does anyone else feel that they would be much better off if they were drug addicts? Given a flat, rent paid, council tax paid, bills paid PLUS given benefits. What is the incentive for people like me to get up in the morning and go to work? Where is the justice in this?
Additional Details
Is anyone else in the same situation? If so, what did you do? Thanks x

Same situation.... nothing can be done. me & my husband were living in a private one bedroom flat which we could barley afford, then came along our little one, we were going to struggle with a bigger place & the council would not help us out at all & was told any available housing would be given to homeless people & people on benefits.... it's just not fair, We both work, we don't do drugs so why can't we be treated fairly?

Well, hopefully most college going students are selecting fields which have opening and is part of an expanding market. Attending college is not about getting a degree in only what you want to do for a living, it's also about whether or not there are job in that market.

A nuclear physicist is a smart, well educated guy. Unfortunately there around only 20 or 30 jobs available in the field for the 100 and something morons that chose that as their field of expertise.

Stop whining and get a better job. With a degree you can apply for salary position that does not pertain to your degree. The degree shows the effort and intelligence to do other things. The ability to apply yourself in other areas. Unless of course the degree was in ... basket weaving or general ediucation. LOL

Do you not think your advise is a touch perverse and that you might just be over egging the pudding slightly? I have yet to hear of flats being built exclusively for "drug addicts and foriegn people". A degree is no gaurantee of a great, well paid job landed in your lap, you have to find it, work your way up, that is the incentive. What possible incentive is there in becoming a messed up drop out? I understand the core of your question but in all honesty I think you could have worded it better and avoided sounding like a whinger with a range of cliched excuses for not getting on as you would like, think about it!

I refuse to believe flats are being built and earmarked for "foreign people" since that would be political suicide. It is utter nonsense and a big porky on your part.

I do however sympathise with your plight, since it is one I have been in. Council housing is harder to come by because of selfish bastards buying the houses - they themselves may need the council again one day!

Under homeless legislation councils are obiged to place a higher priority on "vulnerable" groups such as RECOVERING drug addicts, mentally ill people, disabled, elderly, pregnant etc. However, few councils will tolerate drug dealing, possession and repeated police activity at an address, and will soon evict such tenants, since there is no shortage of people like yourself to replace them.

Also, now that most councils have a chronic shortage of houses, pregnant women expecting to jump the queue normally have to wait until long after their baby is born.

I fully understand, the "benefit trap" is frustrating, and some people get trapped by it forever, and many seem happy to fall into the trap. The problem is Housing Benefit. This is the most easily and most commonly defrauded UK benefit. It needs to be radically overhauled, and removed in some cases, such as where the landlord is someone other than a council or housing association or cooperative or where there is a mortgage on the property. These private dwellings are more worrying, since in those cases the state is actually buying the house for that landlord.

My girlfriend studied over a period of 6 years for an OU degree which means absolutely nothing to employers. She too can only get scabby low paid jobs for which she is too smart as she is considered 'too old' & over-qualified. I know age discrimination is now illegal in the UK but try and prove it!

We can certainly sympathise with your plight and deplore a system that rewards no-hopers and layabouts and ignores those willing to work for basic wage even though it puts them on the breadline.

We both wish you the best of luck - perhaps try politics? Put your ideas forward as your election manifesto. Bet you get voted in.

Yep, life sucks if you don't take control. I couldn't get a job as a museum curator so I took a low skill job and got another degree, part-time, in a sought-after discipline. Ten years later, I'm in clover. I still get really pissed off when I hear about the dregs of society getting a free ride though, especially when I have to cough up more than £10k in tax each year.

You are too young to be bitter. And whatever you do, dont get a cat. It will be all over with...

Seriously, you need to either pick up a roommate or a second job for the short term. Or find a less expensive flat.

Then you need to start doing something you enjoy. You can sit in that flat and be bitter or you can take action to change your life. You have a degree in music -- you must have enjoyed music at some point. Add it back into your life in whatever way you can.

No one cares about you more than you do. No one is going to rescue you from your situation except you. So you are going to have to save yourself. And I dont know of any super-heroes who are heroin addicts -- bad for the image. Besides, the price of heroin is going up, too. :-)

Sometimes being in charge of our own lives sucks. But it is lightyears ahead of having someone else in charge of it. Take the reins and run your life.

Best of luck to you,

Barbara

Sorry to hear about your predicament - Hubby and I never went to Uni, but both left school college at 18 and worked in the university of life. My husband now earns 75 k a year (he is 35) through experience and we are not struggling to get on the property ladder. All of our friends who went to Uni have not used their degrees at all and have struggled financially since graduation.

However, you sound like a good person and at least you can say everything you have is your own and you have worked for it and you are not a dole scrounger. So be the bigger person and carry on with what your doing - cream always rises to the top and good things happen to good people.

Good Luck for the future

xx

I can totally see where you are coming from, i am in the same situation & its very frustrating. The system is all wrong. Dont be down about it. We have job satisfaction. We have the satisfaction that we are not sponging off the system and you WILL get on in life. You will use your skills and knowledge to work your way up the career ladder and have a really good well paid job. Drug addicts will never have this, they will always be losers. It may not seem like it now, but it will be worth it. Consider taking a 2nd job, part-time. I have a a fulltime job 9-5 and i work evenings and sometimes weekends at a part-time job to get extra cash. It will all be worth it in the end.

Somehow the "Great" has gone out of "Great Britain." It's idiots who write the rules here now - God help us.
Good luck to you - I'm wishing a big lottery win comes your way this weekend.

i can sympathise - hopefully things will get better soon.

I know exactly where your coming from!

But, hey, stick with it.
That decent education you got will come good, it will get you a well paid job before you know it and then you'll be able to live it up on more than £100 a month!

Just think of it as having to experience the rough to fully appriciate the smooth!
