Is it fair that those who don't buy house and contents insurance just get compensation anyway from the Government yet some people buy their insurance. Will the thrifty get handouts as well? I am thinking of those people whose homes are flooded.
They say they can't afford insurance, but I bet they smoke, drink, have expensive computer games and all the latest 'must haves' etc.
House insurance is usually less than a £1 a day, but then it is boring isn't it. Think on though about replacing the contents of their homes and repairs to the houses themselves. I know which I consider to be better value for money.
What do you think?

Actually I DON'T sell insurance, I am a retired pensioner who pays house and contents insurance. I don't see why those who don't get handouts. Doesn't seem fair really. |

I quite agree. I have a three bed semi with £40,000 cover for £85- so its not too expensive- less than most people spend on their luxuries. I am not saying there are not exceptional circumstances but it is affordable. And yes i have taken chances in the past. But contents insurance has not changed in price since 1994. I have worked in a kiosk in a supermarket and i have seen the obscene amounts of money that just such people spend on cigarettes, alcohol and lottery. I don't think its fair to expect the government to pick up the tab- these are the same people who will be complaining next month that the government isn't spending enough on public services. Sometimes we have to take responsibility for our eventualities and our own lives. |

I agree with you and said the same thing to my husband the other day.Home and contents insurance is not so expensive and you never know when you may need it.I do however feel for those who did have insurance to find that it did not cover this sort of thing.That is all wrong,the insurance companies are quick enough to take your premiums ,there should be no opt outs.Act of god is a real cop out!Which god?What if you are an atheist so it does'nt apply surely?I certainly would take my insurers to court over that one (Billie Connoly did). |

It isn't fair. I believe if the govt. can cough up funds for the uninsured, it should have to do the same for the people who have insurance. When you lose your home, insurance is the last thing on your mind. The govt. should treat everyone equally.(like that will happen). |

Oh, right--- the other people are all out to get things over on us good guys. Poor little us, always being abused by poor people.
First, in the US you can't buy a home without buying insurance unless you're paying cash up front for the home.
The fact is that in the US home insurance is a lot more expensive than what you're describing. A friend owns some land in New Orleans and thought that after the hurricane floods would be a great time to build since building costs would be down. Think again... the flood insurance required to get a mortgage to build the house would have doubled his house note.
You really should stand in the other person's shoes for a few days before passing judgement. |
