Sigurros | I got hired to be a Real Estate secretary. They will pay me 1k for every property sold. What do you think? |
Basically filing papers and and organizing data. Is this a good job? I almost feel like it is not worth it. |

It sounds great if you live in an area that sells at least 3 houses a month! If you live in a really small crappy rural town (like I live in) it might not be worth it. Look into how many houses they sell a month or year on average to see if you think it is worth it.
Good luck!! |

I was a real estate broker for many years before I changed careers. (I also put myself through school working as a secretary before that!) I have never heard of an arrangement like this in a real estate office and I wouldn't touch it if I were you. It sounds to me as though they don't have the steady income to guarantee your salary, they're short on funds, and so they only want to pay you when and if they make sales.
You know that they figured out their projected sales before they made the offer. They know they're not going to be making, say, 8 sales a month because they don't need to pay a secretary $8,000 a month. So they're allowing for the possibility they might make 0-1 sales in a month and then they're not obligated to pay a secretary money they're not making when business is poor.
Will your creditors be okay with receiving payment only when and if they make sales? Will you be okay with eating only when and if they make sales? I bet you can find something with more security. |

i'd opt for 8 or 10.00 an hour instead, must be new with not alot in sales yet...i need to get paid, i have this nasty habit that forces me to work.. it's called eating.. :O |

That could be lucrative, but how many agents are working at your office. Since housing is so overpriced right now lots of agents can't sell anything. |

You'll be paid hourly...not on commission. You're not doing the foot-work for the selling, the agents are. A secretarial job is not a sales position. You'll be considered an employee, not an independent contractor.
If this Broker is offering you your pay on a per-sale basis...he is violating real estate law (at least in NY). I would go down to your County's Board of Realtors office and run this whole thing by them to see what they say. If they say that this "payment" is illegal, consider the answer golden and move on to search for another office. As the saying goes: If something sounds too good to be true..it usually is |

MIND THE GAP
 |
As an employee, you must be paid the minimum wage or more. What you are saying about your pay is NOT LEGAL. They must also pay social secutity and other taxes for each employee.
If no property is sold, you do not get any pay. An employee MUST BE PAID. |

I have been in realestate field for more than 8 years and I feel even if the company is generating good business, its always advisable to work on percentage instead of fixed amount per deal, it might that the company is generating good business but the number of deals they finilize might be much lesser, in this case you will only be on the loosing side. |

Would all depend on how many properties they close each month. If they sell 10 houses a month - then it's GREAT! |

Would you have to work in their office or could you work from home? Remember it is unlikely that you will get benefits with this arrangement. |

I guess you are used to making more than that? One thousand dollars to do the paperwork sounds pretty good to me! If they sell one property a week, that would be a nice 52,000 dollar a year income. And all you are doing is the paperwork, not the tough stuff, like showing the property, managing the negotiations, putting up with the buyer and seller irrational personalities during negotiation times.
If you really are wondering if it's not worth it, then maybe you should consider your options in other jobs.
If you do take the job, amend the contract to allow you to not be present if there is no paperwork to be done due to no sales. That way you could possibly find some other contract work too, or just find time to do errands and chores for yourself and your family. If it were me, I'd take the job. I'm not so sure that it's at all illegal to file papers, and organize data under a contract of 1K, like some other people have said. |

IF you're going to get paid that kind of fee and in that way, you might have to get licensed as a sales person.
Before taking the position, it might be to your advantage to check with the local Board of Realtors and/or the State Real Estate Commission to clarify the "gray area".
Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

I think that this is a very good job. In most cases if you are just a secretary you don't get paid for every sale. Just think, you are not a agent and not doing any of the work and getting paid for every sale. Lucky you. |
