Wow, people think that's a lot. I wonder where they live... I've rented a room in my house a few times for about $700/mo. here in California. I charged twice that in NYC subletting.
Do you get your own bathroom? Is there parking? Is it month to month or are you signing a lease? Month to month is good unless they boot you when you're not expecting it, but it leaves you free to go if you don't like it. Maybe a short, 6 month agreement.
Kitchen is also a big deal if you eat in... are you expected to share groceries or do you get your own spot. Also, if they party or not can affect you a lot. Inquire as to their schedule. Do you have a private entry or is it a room in a standard house where you might disturb them? Are you expected to clean house? Dog sit/baby sit? How much privacy will you have for your 5 bills? How much more to get an apartment?
Most of all, you need to know what kind of situation they are in and how close to them they expect you to be. I had a friend who rented a room and became the shoulder to cry on.... not worth it. But I've also rented room where I never even see my roommate and all was good for over a year. And as someone said.... got to measure the creep factor with your gut. Bring a friend or parent and see what they think of him/her.

What is the security deposit? Do you need to give last month's rent, too? Exactly which utilities are covered (most states make them pay for heat and water)?

You could rent a really nice apartment for 500 a month. And, if you don't know them very well you could get yourself into some pretty dangerous territory. It'd be safer just to get a nice apartment + you'd have a little more freedom and most likely a lot more room. |

You would be actually "living with this person." It's kinda dangerous. Find out if this person had previous tenant. If he/she did, get info and call to find out about the landlord.
If I were you, I wouldn't take it. I would be afraid because you never know what happens in the middle of the night. |

That is very expensive!!! I have a 2 bedroom appartment,central air,stove, refrigerator and I don't even have to pay water.All this for 350.00.+100.00 on the light bill.Might not be much of a difference but I don't have anyone to be looking at me and creeping me out.And since she is the owner she is going to be after you telling you to keep it clean all the time. |

$500 a month in California is cheap. Depends on where you live. don't just let them ask you the questions it's for you too. Find out if you have to share a bathroom, if they have friends over all the time, lease, security deposit. People do it all the time, but you still want to make sure you're safe. |
