Tokisa, you don't say if this is fridge goes with the rental. If it is, I would tell management to replace it with a better one. If it is rusted out or the seals so bad that mice can get in, they should replace it or fix it. If you have a severe rodent infestation and cannot get rid of them there may be some housing standards board in you city, the city inspector maybe. You might complain to them, but then you might be evicted too. If you buy a new one, I don't think that mice would be able to chew their way in through the seals for quite some time. Seals are easily replaceable in any case. You might try a professional exterminator, and you might be able to get the landlord to pay for it. Just a few ideas-----hope it was some help. I think you should complain to management or the landlord about the problem. I don't know what your lease agreement looks like, but any attorney would probably look at it and give you advice about breaking your lease at no charge. There are also some sites online where you can ask legal questions. I bet we have some lawyers in Yahoo Answers that might chime in. Good Luck!

You need to report the infestation to your landlord and the local board of health.

Bring it to the landlords attention. Give them a period of time to act on it. You may also contact your local Attorney generals office regarding the issue and your rights as the tennant in a lease. This is reason to break the lease provided the landlord has done nothing about it. Personally I also beleive they are responsible for purchasing a new refrigerator for you.

Sounds like you have 'em bad.

Would you like a cat? We have 3, and rarely see mice.

There has to be a hole in your fridge some where. A mouse can get through a hole about the size of a dime. Your landlord is responsible , so tell him. Try putting mouse traps around with peanut butter. Also if you have holes around stuff the holes with steel wool. Good luck

I would contact the health department and have the housing turned in. This way you have documented proof. You should then have no problem breaking the lease at that point and time. If you are on Government subsidized housing, you need to contact them. There should also be a housing authority association in your area if you live in a large city. I would also contact them. This would save anyone from going through what you are going through. Mice not only defecate, but pee as they run, so just because you can't see their tracks, they are there! Get your children out as fast as your can! Good luck!

Try keeping your cheese somewhere else, that should solve the problem I think.

kitti_kat008
is there anything rotton in there?

SweetBrunette
I wouldn't be surprised that the mice will chew a way into the new refridgerator.

You should be able to break the lease since the landlord is completely irresponsible in eliminating the mices. You need to take pictures of all of the damage that the mice did. Try to take pictures of the mice as well. This way you have the evidence if the landlord ever try to take you to court. In addition have a picture you with your children and date all of your pictures and the time along with the names and ages of all of your children.

Contact your landlord and the Health Department to let them know what's going on. If your landlord doesn't do anything, contact your local Housing Authority.

I'm really unsure how mice are getting into your fridge. The seal should be tight enough that they can't get in there. I have also never heard of them chewing through metal.

Is this really a serious question?

I had the same problem but it was only one determined mouse. He was getting in through the drain pan and hole. Once I trapped him the problem was gone. Your landlord owes it to your family's health to provide a bug free rodent free apartment or it is definately grounds for the breaking of the lease. Document your conversations and/or letters in case you need them. Give him a set amount of time and then call the Board of Health for what your next step should be. Don't take it on yourself to stop paying rent or breaking the lease or anything without going through the proper channels but get out of there!!!
