No, once you are 18 and able to sign a contract you can do either, but can 17 you can not rent or lease.

You can do NEITHER until you are of legal age, which is normally eighteen. Both are contracts, and those not of legal age cannot enter into a binding contract.

However, if the landlord chooses to ignore the fact that you are not of legal age, you can surely rent OR lease a place. The landlord should simply be aware that he has NO legal grounds upon which to collect rents or money for damages caused.

Normally to lease and to rent are the same thing.... When you rent an apt you must first sign a lease. The lease states the terms and conditions of the rental contract.

"A lease is a binding, legal contract in which you agree to pay some amount of rent for a specific piece of property, for a specific period of time." www.taa.org

If you mean you can rent it but not lease it out, then yes. Some states allow you to rent at 17 (usually you must have a co-signer) However, if you are trying to lease something out -as in you own something that you want to lease to someone, you must be 18.

UPDATE:

To "German Beauty", (however I have a feeling your answer will be removed soon as it is offensive). Hun, I think you are mistaken. Rent to buy or Lease to buy are terms used to discribe buying the property through a rental process, but ALWAYS say "lease" or "rent" to buy. With out the "to buy" either of those terms mean nothing more and would never indicate ownership at the end of the contract.

Some people call renting a property "leaseing" because you must first sign a lease - which is a legal contract binding you to the rental terms. So it is sort of a "nick name" to renting.
