I interviewed a realtor and he put his sign post in front of my house before I decided to hire him. Comments?
A realtor I interviewed put his sign post in the yard this morning without my permission. I interviewed him yesterday. I didn't have a contract with him. I had actually decided not to hire him. Is this a common thing? I don't want to alientate the realty community by approaching this the wrong way.
Suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

I don't believe this is a common thing. However, I don't think a realtor would wait for contract to start selling your house. :) They want to move fast.

I would call him up and tell him that you appreciate his enthusiasm, but you hadn't made your decisions yet. Apologize if there was a miscommunication but advise him you are not prepared to proceed today and will be removing his sign, then ask when would he like to come pick it up.

My personal experience is realtors are generally in a hurry. This realtor probably only heard part of what you said. So there was obviously a misunderstanding.

You are looking out for yourself. It is important you do that. I doesn't matter if its a realtor, attorney or doctor -- You are first and most important, don't let anyone take that for granted.

Just throw the sign away. It cost him money for the sign. If he shows up asking for the sign, you can tell him to go to the landfill to find it.

this would be an ethics violation in my book

either you gave him the impression that he got the job are he s just an azzhole take down the sign if you ain t paying him and leave it at that

No, he can't do that. Take the sign down and tell him to pick it up immediately. Then call his broker and notify them of what he did.

Remove it, and take it back to his office. Make sure he hasn't listed your house, but that you don't appreciate that he jumped the gun.

If you signed nothing with him, then he has no right to put a sign in your yard. There is probably some violation with his local board to have his sign on an unlisted property, there is in my area. My opinion is, that was ignorance on the agents part, he should know better. If you have trouble with him, you can contact your local board of realtors to report it. Also make sure he has not put your home in the MLS. This could prevent another agent from being able to enter it when you do decide who to list with.

Price is what you pay for value.
Be aware of this realtor/agent. He or she doesn't have much consideration for your opinion or thoughts.

During the housing bubble, a lot of them got bad habits. Some new ones never really have much experience. They entered the market just because it was hot.

Interview them and go with ones with good reputation.

Good luck!

---------------------------------

On a different note...
Not sure if this would help. Usually, a housing market correction last for years. It is unlikely things will brighten up in a few months, afterall, this bubble took 5 years for form.

It might be better to give some discount so you unload the house quickly and can use the gain of the home to make money elsewhere quickly. At the same time, you will save money by not paying mortgage for the next 5 months.

For example, if mortgage is $2500/mo. and you have $300,000 gain sitting in the house, by selling it now rather than 5 months later will save you $12500. It will also earn you as much as $7000 from interests (Assuming CD are paying 5.5% or higher).

Total financial benefit for selling early would be $20,000. I would give buyer some discount just because of that.

Finally, keeping a house in selling condition is a lot of work. If your realtor does staging, it costs extra to rent furnitures. If you are living in the unit, it takes extra effort to keep it clean. So, sell it fast!

I dont know, i suppose it could have been a misunderstanding, but... sounds cocky to me. I woudn't hire him at all. Someone with a big ego, or who is overconfident, could offend possibl ebuyers, or make them uncomfortable. And he might be pushy with you, to. You should be perfectly comfortable with your realtor and be able to talk with them about your thoughts and ideas for the house.

Reaper King
call him and tell him to pick his sign up. probably was a bit needy of him to do that. basically he was marking his territory, you know, like dogs do? he assumed that if the sign was out front then no other realtors would bother coming in and asking for business. since you're not going with him, call him and either tell him to get his sign or just throw it away. either way the realtor was out of line for doing that so it's their loss if you throw the sign away.

BrokenRomeo
Tell him you haven't signed anything with him and were thinking about going with someone with a lower commision. See if he will lower his, if not tell him to pick up the sign.

patience3987
Tell him to remove the sign. He jumped the gun. If he doesn't remove it promptly, and since you don't have a contract with him, remove it yourself. You wouldn't be breaking the law doing that.
