USA FLYBOY 182 | I live in AZ and want to move to Maine because the houses are cheap. any body know why there so cheap? |
Is it because of jobs hard to get or what? |

depends on what area you are talking about, for the most part - the cities are quite expensive , especially the coastal cities. But some of the back woods areas are very cheap for the reason you said- there is NO work, also a grocery store is a half hour to hour drive along with a department store, or hardware store.
you will earn half of what you earn in AZ, and you might drive a hour just to make that. |

because it cost a fortune to heat them. |

The economy of the state. There are not that many jobs available and the weather is a factor as well. |

Probably, plus it is cold. |

Maine is a great place to live!! I have lived here all my life. Homes are "Cheap" for a few reasons. The average age of a home in Maine is 45... The pay for a comparable job in Maine is considerably less than Arizona. Maine is the second Highest taxed state in the nation... But It is a small price to pay for living in such a great state. Houses are comparatively cheaper but as in all markets you can buy a home here from $75,000 to $7,500,000. My Dream home is currently on sale for $1,3000,000. The home I live in is currently on the market for $109,000. |

You answered your question yourself. The pricing of housing depends upon demand for housing. Having lived in Phoenix for years in the 60's, Los Angeles in the 70's and 80's and Coeur d'Alene Idaho years later, I am no stranger to escaping for low price housing.
Move to an area you want to be in or near. Housing prices will seem most reasonable anywhere you want to live factoring in labor supply and demand.

Maine has a fantastic job market in the southern area. And closer to large cities. However the jobs are with less pay. You better get some real cold weather gear if you plan on living there.
I would recommend that you stay there during the winter for a few weeks before doing it to be sure. |

I've been to Maine, and it seems like it has a pretty solid job market, I wouldn't say it is any better or worse than your average. The land is very pretty there, and it really gives you that New England feel that the other states up there give you. I would say the only reason I can think that they would be cheap is because it is one of the more forgotten states, and it is cold, so people don't flock to move there. |

The economy in Maine is not bad, but on average the salaries in the state may be lower than other states. The housing market it the more rural and inland areas is less expensive than the coast for obvious reasons; the water views etc. The winters can be bad but generally they are no worse than other New England state winters. |

Jobs are hard to get, the winters are long and cold.
It is a beautiful state, though. |

Arizona has cheap housing too. It all depends on where you live within either state. You need to compare city with city, rural with rural. |
