try getting an exchange but if you can afford it go for it,

If you're only doing it to get away from drugs I wouldn't bother. Drugs are not only found on council estates, they're everywhere.

Have you considered asking your council if they can move you? Most councils are able to do 'swaps'. It may mean you have a smaller house or a flat for a while but your quality of life may be better for it. A smaller place may be cheaper rent so it'll help you save your deposit for a private place.

Have a look at what your local Housing Associations can offer too.

House shares are a good way to live for a few years but you MUST take a few simple but important protective measures.

If you want to share a rented property with a friend you must first agree exactly who will be responsible for what parts of the fixed expenditure.

The fixed expenditure for this purpose includes:
Rent, Council Tax, Insurance, Gas, Electricity, Phone. TV Licence, maintenance & repair & replacement fund for appliances-in-common (cooker, fridge, tv etc..
This is what you have to spend on common services before you buy food and drink. Remember, you must be able to cover these costs in full every month/week from your wages.

If you can't pay these from wages then do not be tempted to skip any payment or take a loan to cover it. That way lies debt and disaster. You must look for something that you can afford.
I appreciate that you want to leave your estate but getting into that sort of debt is even worse. (you're looking at potentially many thousands of pounds debt in less than a year - trust me on this).

Set all this out clearly and in writing, agreed and siged by you both an an independent witness, then you could be preventing legal trouble if one of you defaults on their share of the expenses; or claims "I never watched tv/used the cooker/fridge etc...." You get the idea I'm sure.
It's for your mutual protection so your friend should be ok with this.

Once you have worked out the fixed expenses you can then see what's left over for eating, drinking etc. Also consider what will happen if your friend moves out. If you can still afford it then go ahead.

Good luck.

have you tried to exchange your house?
you can move anywhere in the country with a mutual exchange with another council tenant.

depends mate ....

i rent a 1 bedroom flat in a nice quiet area with my fiance -

its not cheap nearly 700 pound per month ( surrey for you) but its worth it -

plus the initial deposit over 1000 pounds -

but the quality of the area is awesome - no drugs not rough at all -

depnds on your financial situation - can you save for few months ?

Whatever you do, it would be preferable to where you now live. I don't suppose that the local authority or police have done anything about the area, if this is so, it is the norm !

try to get a exchange
you may be surprised some people may prefer it there

You have to weigh up what it will cost to rent privately, which will be a lot more than renting from the council. If you feel that you both can afford it and the person isn't going to leave you in the lurch then go for it.

why not ask the council to re-locate you to a different area?it may take a while but they will.or you could do a house swap with another council tenant who wants to move to your area.check your local council office, they usually have a list of people who would like to exchange.hope this helps.don't go private, you'll end up paying over the odds.

That happened to me too - loads of druggies hanging around outside, my car wasnt safe.. I was scared all the time... get out !! It was doing my head in... the neighbours were horrendous, I was looking out my window every five minutes to check on my car... just go and live in the countryside... Its fab now... honestly... council estates are the pits..

You know the circumstances and the environment in which you live far better than I do. If for whatever reason or reasons e.g. affordability, bringing up young children, better schools in another area, prospects of a job there (if your'e working) or you are able to travel reasonably to your current one - if for these and other reasons known only to you, you feel it makes sense to move, then it is sensible.

What I am saying consider all of the implications as they will affect you before you make a decision to rent privately.

The other option is to approach the council and see if they can offer you accommodation in another but better area. This is also a consideration to bear in mind before you decide.
