You listed phone, don't forget to count a home phone and a cell phone. Also you will need renters insurance. Do you have a car payment, or will your parents be giving you a car? Medical needs, doctors visits, perscriptions...etc. Best of luck on your own... yeah it's expensive, but damn it's liberating!

JoJo
Good list-keep in mind the following: heating costs can vary widely. I can't speak for all parts of the country, but gas is ususally cheaper than electric heat. Also, eating at home can save tons of money. Too many singles get in the habit of having most meals out, and it really adds up compared to eating in. Good Luck!

Spoiled
Renters insurance ~ you can get a discount if you get renters insurance at the same place you have your car insurance.

To save $$$$ if you have a cell phone, dont get a house phone.

Good Luck!!!!!!

If you will be buying people gifts on birthdays, Christmas, etc. you will want to budget that as well. I also notice you didn't list any savings at all. It is good to save a little each month, even if it is a very small amount.

It is suggested to have a 3-6 month surplus of cash in case you are injured, lose your job, etc. But you can work up to that by saving a little at a time.

If this is the first time own your own......you'll need cash enough for the move-in deposit.......phone deposit......electric deposit......Renter's Insurance is a MUST.....don't pass it up.

Unless you plan on eating on paper all the time, get some dishes and all your other kitchen needs. If you're lucky, ask for this stuff for Christmas and it will really help (when I moved out of my parent's home, it was right after Christmas but they knew I was looking so they got all the essential stuff for me for gifts. It was great!).

The Skizzanator
Condoms! If you go through them like I did, it's definitely an expense.

Also, get a cleaning lady, just to come once a month for thorough cleaning that us men don't do (windows, inside cabinets, etc.). It'll be $50 well spent to keep your place from looking like a Frat house after 6 months.

sexytrojan
You are VERY thorough!

You won't need to pay water if you rent an apartment.
Do you have a cell?
Furniture is a big one, but you get that over time. Put TV and stereo at the top!
Clothes

Have a housewarming, and you'll get things like towels, kitchen stuff, etc.

Go to the thrift store! You'll find a lot of useful new items that you can use.

it's a pretty good list. If you're moving in somwhere for the first time, your "misc" list might be quite long as there are so many things yu discover you need when in a new place. Make sure you factor in any agent's fees, or any deposit required to actually get through the door of an apartment in the first place. many places will ask for a month or so's rent in advance as well.

good planning - nice one!
