I need to know if people can still get squatters rights, if you find an abandoned house and just move in.?
In the state of Washington. I know that years and years ago people could have squatters rights but I was wondering about it in todays economy.

I think there's something called "adverse possession", but think this applies to controlling someone else's land.

When I've heard about someone deciding to claim an abandoned building (happens now and then in DC), they often get moved out again, under the trespass laws.

Maybe you can consult with a local attorney.?

.You might get free accommodation in jail.

No. Abandoned or not, it's still private property, and someone's responsible for it. Their identity will be on record at the county courthouse. In addition, any such place is subject to the local fire codes, which distinctly disallow you to "just move in". Whether the property owner gives a rip or not, the police find out about you and they WILL come and remove you. You manage to burn the place down or sustain an injury knocking about an ill-maintained house, the town or city is legally liable for allowing you to be there where you don't belong. The taxpayers aren't about to tolerate that! So if you're planning to do this, expect to be arrested.

sudsylin@sbcglobal.net
abandoned does not mean unowned. check your local zoning laws

tankgirl_84
Dream on McDuff! I would think that the local officials would like their taxes first, and then their are probably others inline for that house. But you might be able to pick it up at an auction....

You can ask that question at your county recorders office!

Not Laughing w/ U
It's not abandoned. Someone is paying taxes on it otherwise it would now be owned by the county.

I would like to know that my self way cool quesation but im in Cali

OkieBoy
you would still have to pay any property taxes regardless of how long ago, plus bring the house up to appropriate city, countey and state codes and probably a number of other costly things. So its till wouldn't be, something for nothing.
