I need to know the boundaries for a fence. Where can I find a drawing of my plot of land?
I can't find any "stakes at the corners of the lot".
My lawyer doesn't have it, we don't have it. The realtor doesn't have it.....

Nope , None of those peoples ( lawyer , realtor ) jobs to have it .

The county tax office does .
Cost me $4 for a print out with measurements of mine and all the surrounding properties .

Always ask the place whose job IT IS !

Your exact plot should be on file somewhere. Try the city or county offices. It should be somewhere in files concerning past sales of your property. Then you're going to need to hire a surveyor to come out and mark it off for you (not sure, but i think that runs about $200). Also look into local laws, some places require that your fence be 6-12" in from the property line. If you want it right on the property line, you'll want to talk to your neighbors and clear it with them (in writing in possible).

Go to the courthouse and get a PLAT of your property. It will tell you exactly the boundries. It would be located in the Land recording department.

ELVI
it should be located on file at your local courthouse, otherwise you will have to have another survey done.

With the paperwork for you home, you should have a copy of the survey. If not, contact the assessors office for your township. Purchase a copy of the survey. Secondly, you may want your property stakes pulled, and chalk the property line. Make sure there are no easement issues. The stakes are buried, sometimes you can find if you know the area, other than that, a metal detector will be needed.

The county where you live should have a plot map but then you need a surveyor to come mark it.

Karen R
Only way to find the exact property lines is to have a stake survey done.

You should have a recorded survey of your property lines filed with the county/city. You need to go and get a copy of it and the fencing company is RESPONSIBLE for setting the fence properly.

It also has the locations of utilities.

If your survey is over 10 years old (and you have not lived there for 10 years) I would recommend getting a new survey.

Go to your county assessors office and request a copy. There should be a small fee involved. Ask them about local regulations regarding whether or not a fence can be built on the property line or not.

It's on the survey! You got a copy with your closing documents which should be in a folder or envelope of some sort. There are a lot of documents in there!
