X-10 | I think I can afford living on my own, but can I get you're advice? |
I want to move out. For many reasons. I want to live on my own before moving in with someone else. I want to know what I like and dislike and what I have OCD over before letting other people live with me. I want to be independent of my mother. Of course, I don't want to follow all my mother's rules anymore. I want to buy and cook my own food so I can be healthier. I want to live either right by school or right by work so I can save on gas and get in shape by walking.
Now, I make $15/hr. Right now, I am working full time, and I have a side job where I make around $60-100/week. I will be going to school in the fall, so I will only be working 19 hours a week at my job. I will be back to full time in January. If I save $2000 by the end of August, do you think I can afford a cheap apartment, $450 or less, including all utilities?
My monthly estimate:
Rent 450
Gas 200
Food/Toiletries 400
Car 235
Car Ins 175
I'm pretty sure I could do it. What do you think? Additional Details tealamarie
I spend 40-50 right now. Work is only 6 miles away, school is 9-13 (depending if I leave from work to go to school or leave from home to go to school) But I drive around with my friends a lot into the city. This semester, a lot of my friends are going to be gone so I won't be driving around nearly as much. I'm hoping to get a place between work and school so I could be in walking distance to one of them. |

Most apartment complexes will require that you make 3 times the monthly rent, so if you find something that you can afford around $450.00 a month they will need your take home to be no less than $1350.00 per month, some apartments do not include utilities in their rent unless you can find one that does, if it includes cable it might not include electricity so you will need to budget about $100 for electricity and $50 for cable if you only go with basic.
with the budget you've listed your outgoings (not including electricity) would be $1460.00 per month. What about entertainment? i.e. movie rental, going to a movie, dinner with friends? What about an emergency? Car breaks down. If you live close to work and school, that might cut down on your gas and lower it to less than $100 per month at the most $40 every two weeks. Right now based on what you make full time (40 hrs / week) minus your outgoing expenses it will leave you, after you've only paid the above, with $100 a week left over. Can you survive on that?
You might be cutting it very close in fact you might struggle for a while trying to make ends meet. Did you have furniture to move into this apartment? What about dishes, silverwear, cups, glasses, coffee maker, toaster, pots, pans to cook with? Towels, sheets, cleaning supplies, toiletries, vacuum etc. What about internet connection? Broadband cable internet is $45 per month, a basic telephone line is $21.00 per month. These are all things you need to take into consideration when moving into your own place.
Also they will pull your credit, if you haven';t established any they will require a co-signor on the lease, so make sure your mom is willing to co-sign. Do a lot of research, you might want to save more than $2000 in order to have a cushion to protect you in hard times.
Good luck. |

it sounds great on paper, but have you looked at apartments where you live? I know that in Louisville, where I'm from, we're considered to have one of the lowest costs of living from anyone else in the country, and a "cheap" apartment here goes for around 500-700 a month, and that doesn't include ANY utilities. Plus you have to factor in everything it costs to set up a new apartment-here's a list of things you'll need-
a microwave (not essential but nice)
a toaster
pots and pans
dishes
silverware
cups and glasses to drink from
cleaning supplies like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, dish soap, laundry detergent. toilet bowl cleaner, etc.
shower curtain
toilet paper
towels and washcloths
a bath mat or rug (not necessary but nice to have so you don't break your neck getting out of the shower)
enough groceries to stock your refrigerator
a table to eat at and chairs
a sofa (where are your guests going to sit)
a tv (plus the cost of setting up service)
a telephone
curtains or blinds for the windows, most cheap apartments don't come with these
bed and dresser (which you might already have from your mom's) but what about extra sheet sets and blankets
that's about all I can think of for now, but they are all things I know I overlooked when I moved out on my own for the first time. Setting up house is VERY expensive! |

I am sure you can do this. If you plan not to have a socail life. Do you have a close friend you 2 can get a 2 bedroom and split rent and utilities especially if you are going to school this fall things maybe really tight. |

If you are not working full time I don't see how you can. Don't forget utilities... gas, water, cable(?). Your $2000 would be WAY gone before Christmas (don't forget to buy presents)... plus books for school and tuition.
YOu didn't say how old you were, but you ARE working very hard... keep it up!
Stay at home and lets have this conversation next summer.
Good luck! |

Well, if you're making $15/hr, you're doing better than me, lol. It can be kinda hard to find an apartment with all utilities included, usually when people go for those they stick around. Also, are you going to have cable/internet/phone? It's definately possible, but make sure you have all your ducks in a row. Factors to consider:
Cookware
Dishware
Flatware
Cups/mugs
Cleaning supplies
Laundry
Microwave/Coffee pot/small appliances
Heat/AC
Towels and washcloths
Measuring cups/spoons
Random backup money (laid off from job, car breaks down, etc etc)
Rental insurance
Bad habits (I'm a smoker lol)
Bedding
Furniture |

Your estimate for food and toiletries is probably too high unless you eat out a lot or buy very expensive shampoo.
If you are able to find an apartment - including utilities for $450 a month, you're very lucky. Where I live you wouldn't be able to touch a run down slum for $450 a month.
19 hours a week at $15/hour would make your take home pay around $800. Assuming you do have $2000 saved by the end of the summer, I guess you could live for 4-5 months on your weekly salary and what you have saved. |

Read what Trance has to say and then re-think your budget. What you propose is possible, but it won't be all fun and glory. |

It really depends on where you live, where you plan to grocery shop, gas prices. I think it's a great step for you to budget out like you are. Don't forget that you will need furniture, dishes and linens for your house and that you might also need to buy some things occasionally like clothes, cleaning supplies, books for school, etc. Also, you need to include in your budget any entertainment like movies, food with friends, etc.
best of luck! |

the budget will depend on which city/neighborhood you want to live in.
I live in Washington DC, and the average monthly rent here is atleast twice as much as what you have budgeted. i pay nearly $900 including utilities for my room in a shared apartment. Same goes for food....atleast $600/month
so you may want to tailor your budget to whichever city you will live in, considering how much prices are rising these days
so dont make a decision in a hurry, and goodluck! |

No that alone is $1460. Have you thought about how much its going to cost for deposits on the place as well as having utilities turned on. |

All I have to say is that there is ALWAYS something unexpected that comes up that costs money when you are out on your own!! So you had better have some money , and the more the better, in your saving acct. for a rainy day, and expect rain often! I am not trying to discourage you, just keeping it real, and speaking from years of experience.
If you are really going to listen to what people who have gone through what you have , here, have to say to you, I would recommend that you wait a while and save more money so that your last sentence can say " I'm VERY sure I can do it !! Good luck to you . |

That is a great idea. But when you leave your parent's house, remember that now you are on your own. Your bills are yours, groceries are yours, laundry is yours, cooking is your responsibility. You should not go to your parent's home once a week and borrow the washing machine. Go 3 times a week for lunch...just for a visit. If you go to your parent's home for a visit, do that... VISIT not ask for cash. You wanted to move out, so your life is your resposibility. It is extremely satisfying to take care of yourself, but life will hold a whole new set of challenges.
Good luck |

I believe so. Also, your gas estimate is VERY high...so that's a good thing. |
