I think the goverment should be held responsible for all the people who took on?
morgages at extortionate rates in the past 10 years the British Goverment should be made to pay these families that can no longer afford to stay in their homes and for allowing Developers to charge such ridiculous prices for homes which are frankly rubbish and thrown up so quick they are not truly worth the paper they are written on and these so called luxery apartments which are nothing more than posh council houses and charged at the most extortunate prices and no bigger than matchboxes I know this for a fact after looking at some myself, I could not have even fitted my king size bed in what was supposed to be the master bedroom let alone wardrobes and bedside tables, as a women I have 10 huge suitcases which also want housing that is before I start with the ornaments,T.V. Books and my desk to work from. I also do not want to sit in a cooking sitting room I hate the smell of cooking in my Lounge and the place for cooking is in a kitchen with a seperate door. What do you think about t

Stammerman!
Why just the last 10 years? The rot started during the 80s under Maggie's "brilliant" reign.

Where exactly is the Govt going to get the money to pay these people? To get a mortgage, you need to borrow...where does that money come from? The savers...The savers should get a decent return for lending their money and at the moment the return is absolute rubbish!
It is a case of supply and demand...welcome to the world of consumers!

Empress
why is the government responsible for that? sure the loans companies have been unscrupulous but thats what sales is! if you cant afford the repayments then you shouldn't have taken out the loan.
we need to start being independent beings who think and decide for ourselves.
on the one hand you want the government to pay your loan? but on the other I bet you would be annoyed if the government started telling you what you could and couldn't do in your home?
it's your loan - you pay it back.

justme
So you want the government to bring in a law to make stupidity illegal? Nobody forced these people to sign for a mortgage that they new they couldn't afford to pay---and then buy plasma TVs and big cars.

What's extortionate? Fact is that mortgage rates over the last 10 years have been the lowest ever.Expensive and pokey little "luxury apartments" and so on is a totally different matter. The people who are responsible for taking these on are the people who bought them.Letting off steam about how this may have worked out for some is one thing.Expecting the Government somehow to take "responsibility" is another.

You have got to be kidding me!

If people enter into bad business deals, that is their own fault, not yours and mine. By the way, WE are the government. We are the source of the money that the government uses for its designs.

If a developer charges too much for a home, don't buy it. If you agree to pay an outrageous price, then that is your baliwick. Don't expect me to bail you out when you screw up your financial position.

If you can't afford to buy, rent something for now. If developers cannot sell at the price they want, then they will lower their price. Demand drives price and supply.

Get real. Make your decisions, and live with them. If other people are stupid in their decisions, you have no responsibility to follow along.

Welcome to the real world.

Welcome to the real world. People have a choice as to which mortgage they take out and for how much. How big a risk they want to take. Government has nothing to do with it.

Whilst I hear what you are saying, I don't remember anyone twisting these people's arms up their backs to overextend themselves with mortgages. And by the same token, no-one forced them to buy where they did!

Everyone is free to make a decision in this country....if we say this then what about people who get fat should the luxury bakers or chocolate and cake shops be held responsible? I could afford these luxury flats and bought an ex council flat bcoz I knew they were over valued...people must take responsibility for their own actions....this Govt has failed in providing affordable homes...for pple so some pple will self cert and lie to get a roof over their kids homes...but if a developer wants to sell his flats at exorbitant prices and someone else is prepared to buy it..so be it..this is not a communist country...the Govt is not here to control everything....
