I thought most people changed the locks?
Whenever I move into a rented property I always change the locks - and give the landlord a key. This has never caused a problem. I do not know who has lived in the property before and who they have given keys to - it's important to be safe. Why is this such an issue and seen as a problem?
Additional Details
I understand that it is the landlord's property so always ask for permission which has never been refused. As for other people having the key, the moment I pay the rent and move in, no one has the right - by law- to enter the property without my permission unless they have a warrant or it is a member of the emergency services for a real emergency so this does not arise. Any landlord or his agent who does this is breaking the terms of the contract. (found this out through looking up the law on landlords and letting)

Thanks for this question 'cos it answered one of mine! I wasn't told when I moved into my rented place that my landlord kept a key till I got a receipt from a gas fitter to say the yearly check had been done! My contract says I would be given 24 hours notice of intending maintainance appointments and a levy would be charged for failed appointments. Fair enough! Never done. After noticing workmen walk into my neighbours property (when he wasn't in) and taking advice, I changed the locks! I was blockading the door every time I had a shower or went to bed up till then. (nervy or what) I informed my landlord, who replied that these un-notified entries would be checked, then nothing. So thanks for your question.

As a landlord, I routinely change the locks prior to a new tenant moving in. This way, I am the first to have a key and avoid issues down the road.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a very important issue. It is also the responsibility of the landlord to ensure minimal safety standards.

usually the landlord should change the locks prior to you moving in and incur that cost, not you. but i do the same! no use taking a chance! never know what terms they left on with the landlord.

explain how a complete stranger (your landlord) having a key to your house is a safety measure again will you........

personally i change the locks, keep the old ones, then change them back when I leave.

It could be an issue becuase the landlord had put in a specific kind of key and the one you have fitted could be inferior.

It could also be that the landlord has given the key to the agents, business parteners etc etc and would need more than one.

Is this an issue with your current landlord? When I owned rental property I changed the locks every time a new tenant moved in. I invested in multiple sets and just switched them out. It was important to me as a landlord that my tenant felt safe. Even if you charge a key deposit and the keys are returned when they leave there is no guarantee how many keys the tenant had made while they lived there.

I am assuming your current landlord is the one who is having a problem. Normally you are required to get permission PRIOR to making any changes to the apartment (ie painting, updating a ceiling fan, changing out the blinds). Realize that the lock you changed in the door belongs to the landlord. You took their property without asking. The new lock may or may not belong to you depending on the lease.

Example, a friend of mine changed out her ceiling fan for a "better" one. According to her lease, the landlord owned the old one and now the new one. She never turned over the old one to the landlord. When she moved she took the new one. The landlord charged her for both and won.

It is always best to get permission in writing before upgrading or changing property that is not yours.

I think a good landlord should allow you to change the locks. you could be in the property and then anyone could walk in. Also they want safety from you since they want your money.

When I moved into my first house, which we bought, I changed the locks for the same reason. I didn't do it when we moved last year because I knew who lived here before but fate stepped in and the door broke so ended up having to have a new door altogether, I hadn't even thought of it until then. I know how many keys I give out to people, I think tfor our house there must be 10 keys with various people. I can't see why it would be a problem as long as your landlord is OK with it. Can't see why they wouldn't be though as long as they have a key. Wish everyone had such common sense.
