lostinconfusion | I want to buy a castle? |
Today I realised that I want to buy a castle. Yes, it's a crazy goal and I'll never really achieve it, but it's something to at least work towards or aim for.
So anyway, I was wondering if any people on here have any idea how I'd go about acquiring a castle in Scotland, or at least having a new one commissioned by a building company. Also, how much money would it cost. I'm talking about something quite complex, but maybe not quite as big as something like Stirling Castle. That style, but maybe not quite as much land on it.
Crazy I know, but thanks. |

I live in scotland. I'd agree with the person who said good luck!. Why on earth you would want to live here? better off with a french one. For what its worth though...
there are several ruined castles that are sold for less than £million but you'd need 10 times that to make them habitable, and they're not much bigger, room wise, than your average .5 bedroom detached.
Forget about building a new one, no one really knows how any more and you wouldn't get planning permission anyway.
And even the stonework alone for a proper castle would cost well over a million on top of the land value, the inside fittings and all the other bits. Unless you want a fake one, in which case why are you bothering?
Unless you have access to a hilton level fortune your best bet is to get a copy of burkes peerage and find out who inherits the big castles now and try and seduce them into marriage. Most of the ones of the order of Stirling size are now in public ownership and not lived in. some of the next level down are lived in still, but also open to the public.
There are some that are in public ownership where the 'warden' lives on site which would kinda be living in a castle! The national trust does actually have some castles that it lets as holiday homes, if you wanted to try it for a fortnight! |

Buying a castle can sometimes be very cheap. That is because the maintenance, taxes and upkeep are so high that literally no one can afford it. Kind of like, you can buy a DC-9 cheap, but keeping it flying is a different matter. Do you have maybe $100,000 a year for expenses? |

Well people do still make castles, i would say a castle from scratch, would cost from £500,000 and upwards...
but you could buy an old run down one and develop it... but then there would be restrictions and all that stuff and having to use certain materials to repair it driving the cost up more and more...
but really, all there is to it is buying a plot of land, then getting those stone mason people to make big castle-like blocks then have it assembled, the most expensive would be like making the inside of the shell livable in modern day what with the weather (in scotland) and all that and the wood interior.. and an architect would be lots...
i would say just get into property developing and build up you're money until you got around £500,000 to a million (it sounds like a lot in one big go but if you are buying and selling a lot of properties then it shouldnt take too long to get together if you keep your living costs down and not make too many crap buys) then take on youre very own grand design...
i want a grand hollywood style mansion.. :) |

Maybe you should live a couple of miles from my house. A guy took a simple little ranch, put up a bunch of turrets on it, and made a fancy entrance. The rest of the property looks terrible, no landscaping, junk decorating the yard, probably no garage - BUT he has his castle. |

I suggest you make yourself a trebuchet.
More info on that here: http://www.ripcord.ws/plans/plans.html
Then recruit a small army and invade a castle in Scotland.

in reality buying a castle would cost you a few million pounds for a small one, and something like 30mil+ pounds for bigger ones.
Building one would be cheaper.
But these are just rough estimates.
Cheers mate! |

That's a cool goal, but I think you would need to go and search for abandonned places of that style and restore them. Oh yeah and you'll need a hell of a lot of money! But it's something to aim for I suppose :)
You could build a really really big one in the sand and live in it, but you'd have to keep renovating it daily :( lol
Good luck |
