Yes, landlords can charge more for extra people. More people use more utilities and create greater liability. |

Have her read through the lease. But I'm sure the lease she signed was just for her, so you moving in would probably void the lease, and the two of you may have to sign a new lease, with which he could raise the rent. I don't live in NY, so I'm not sure what the laws are exactly, I'm just making a 'guesstimate' from personal experiences. |

Sure he can. The original contract was just to have her living there. Any time you add more people the landlord can jack up the rent because the contract has to be modified to allow you to live there, so all terms and conditions can be renegotiated. |

Yes if the lease says it is for one person, than they have every right.
You have to understand the have more costs when more people live in an apartment.
I am sure they do not want to raise it too much. |

I believe he can b/c her contract is for her. He doesn't have to let you move in either. Shes breaking the contract so he has the right to increase it. |

My friend had a similar situation in when he moved in with his fiancee in Queens. It really depends on the wording of the lease. If it states that if additional tenants move in then the landlord can increase the rent; then it should state how much it will increase. My friend fought the increase stating that the lease did not state that ian increase was warranted for additional tenants. However, when the lease expires expect a big increase; unless you are in a rent controlled or stabilized building. |

Yes, because the lease was for her alone. A landlord can do whatever he wants... it's his property. Example: My dad had rentals that were strictly 'No Pets.' One of the renters got a dog, so ended up paying $75 more a month. |

Depends on what the lease says. If it says in the lease that he can raise the rent if another person moves into her apartment, then yes, he can legally raise the rent. If it is not adressed and he is arbitrarily raising the rent, then you might have recourse. But it will probably require you to go to court. |
