I want to save for a down payment on a house, but I pay $1300 for rent. Any suggestions on how I can save $?
I want to save up to $20,000 in the next two years and it would be possible if I didn't have to rent. My credit is getting repaired, its not bad, but its not great. I bring home just about $2500 a mo. and I only have about $500 to spare after all of my bills and living expenses for savings.

Here's one solution: by putting away that $500 a month for the next two years, you will save $12,000, which leaves you with a deficit of $8000. So you need to find a way to make an extra $333 a month. With a part time job earning $6.55 an hour, working 20 hours a week, you could make $361 monthly which would give you $9,400 in two years.

Just remember to buy what you can very easily afford so that you don't end up in foreclosure!

Good luck!

You need to cut down on the bills. Only have what you NEED, not what you want. You do not NEED internet access, that alone will save a grand a year or so. You do not NEED cable, going to the movies, eatting outside the house. etc etc.

If you really want to save you can do it on your own without leeching off your parents or anyone else.

I would find a much cheaper rental, or someone to either rent a bedroom from you or a roommate to move in with. It might not be exactly what you want now, but that would save you on the rent and all the utilities.

Try getting a part time job and BANK everything you possibly can.

Best of luck to you.

Pick up a second job. Cut out cell/home phone (keep one), cable, internet, eating out, take your lunch to work, carpool. Wear last years cloths, shoes, ext. Don't buy anything that in not needed (I mean life or death here, you need food, shelter, utility's) Don't use credit!

Good luck!

find a cheaper rental or perhaps live with a friend for the next two years and share the rent expense. otherwise put the 500 that you can save into a high interest yielding savings account and hope it grows and grows and grows.

Move to a much less expensive place to rent then save every dime of the difference.

You could rent out space if it is a 2 bedroom.

You CAN live without a cell phone and cable TV.

In otherwords cut back to the bare necessities until you fulfill your dream of owning a home.

$20K in 2 years, that's pretty ambitious for anyone. Have you thought about getting a roommate to cut down on rent? Or what about moving in with your parents? I never understood why that was considered so unacceptable if you do with respect towards them and set the rules right away (ie, you do your share of the housework and help out with expenses).
