as much as you possibly can afford. houses are expensive, so are legal fees, stamp duty, furniture, appliances, surveys, bills and repairs and everything else associated with buying a home. that's without the mortgage payments and the deposit to find. given the current economic climate, the bigger deposit you have, the more likely you are to get a mortgage as they wont just give them to anyone anymore.

You will need every penny.

If you are able to save 20% of your income every year then in 5 years you should have enough downpayment to purchase a real estate.

I don't know what the official number is, but getting used to saving your monthly mortgage payment is a good start. You can use a mortage calculator to help estimate a figure for that.

There are a bunch of mortgage calculators here:

In which area you want to buy?

~Ronyea Q♪
You should find out the price range of the house you would like to buy and save 5 to 10 percent of that price to put as a down payment. Good luck.

Hello, so glad to know that you are interested to buy a house 5 years from now. How much do you think is the cost of the house you want to buy? What is your age now? I will recommend you to buy a long term insurance with 5 years to pay savings program with monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual amortization sched. Thanks!

The going rule is 10-20% of your net should be saved for retirement and future needs. There was a great story in yesterday's Washington Post had a good article about buying. If your rent is greater than 6% of your desired price it is time to buy. With current credit crunches you will need 20% down payment. So depending on your price map out how much you should save so you can buy as soon as possible. The market is ripe and will probably be so for the next 18 months.
