go to yahoo real estate section, they have calculators for you to use. These calculators should be able to help you realistically compute what you can buy.
according to the calculator, and assuming that you have no other debt, you can realistically buy a $64,000 house. |

probably no more than $50000 |

A good rule of thumb is that your mortgage payment should not exceed 25% of your take home pay.
So, if you take home $17,000/year, you need a payment of around $325/month. |

I agree, no more than $50,000. Remember property taxes, ALL utilities and any other bills you have. Realistically, you can't afford a house on that salary unless you get a foreclosed house for VERY cheap. It would be unwise to mortgage a house on your income. Consider renting until you can make more money. |

You should check on a FHA loan or something like that and they will let you know how much they will loan you. |

It mostly depends where you are located. Forget Florida. I llive there as an invester. Contact a mortgage company or just do it on line. You can look at realtor.com and see what is out there in your price range. Do not go with the first person who says they can get you into a home. SHOP AROUND FOR PRICES OF MORTGAGES! You can also try some For sale by owner and do a lease option just to get your credit score higher. Also look at maybe buying a duplex or 2-4 family so other people pay your mortgage and insurance. It looks like about a $44,000 house. If you buy a multi family you get more of a house because you use the income from the tenants as more income for you to play with. |

Your mortgage would need to be quite low. However, no one can really answer this for you because we don't know what other debts you have. Ideally, you need to determine your debt to income ratio. This will then determine the type of mortgage you can comfortably afford. |

You should look to rent. Trust me, buying a house is not a easy thing to do. I make more than double what you do, and I am flat broke most of the time. I bought a cheap house also. The payments are cheap, then there are taxes, water bill, trash bill, electric bill, gas bill, phone bill, cable bill, house upkeep (on a cheap house, usually is not cheap), house insurance, car insurance, fuel for cars/lawnmowers, you need furniture, simple lawn tools, lawnmower, groceries. Its hard to do, if I were you, I would continue to rent until a big promotion comes my way. |

you will need homeowners insurance which is an added expense. If you live in a rural area the real estate taxes would be relatively low. You need to make a high down payment if you can and shop around for a good rate and terms. |
