If my landlord knocks on my door without any notice & I have no reason to see him,do I have to open the door??

NY Law requires 24 hours notice that he intends to enter your unit ,unless it is an emergency.
Knocking on the door occasionally to tell or ask you something isn't unreasonable unless they make a frequent habit of it for no apparently valid reason.
If they bother you too much or if they seem like a nut - MOVE!
If you deny them legitimate access to the unit it can be considered grounds for eviction.
Best advice follow the golden rule

um no. You can answer your door whenever you want to or choose to ignore it. But if you don't owe him rent or anything, I'd answer it just to see what he wants there might be something wrong in the building or something that he needs to inform you about.

The law differs in different countries. I know in the UK, a landlord must arrange access in advance, not sure about the US though

So everyone notifies you when they are coming to your apt. Then if he called you would you say....do I have to answer the phone if the landlord called me without any notice. Even if you have no reason to see him he may have a reason to see you. Answer the door.

Rico
I say no. In California the landlord has the right to enter the property to inspect it with 24hrs written notice.

jon_wayne89
NO THEY ARE REQUIRED 24 HOUR NOTICE TO COME IN , UNLESS THERE IS GOOD CAUSE , LIKE A LEAKING WATER PIPE , OR YOUR PLACE IS ON FIRE

ribuckeye
no! unless he or she tells you it is an emergency.

JM
You don't have to answer your door for anyone that you don't want to. Just don't make alot of noise and make him wonder why you aren't coming to the door. And if your landlord lets himself in, anyway - then you have a case against him for unlawful entry of your residence.

Nope.

The ONLY thing you have to do in life is die.

Now you can be compelled to do many things, and dodging a landlord can end up being a very compelling situation.

I don't think you are required to by law, but if you can, it's probably best to remain on good terms with your landlord.

I don't know in your state, but in California, No and if you do, you don't have to let him in. The only exception is if there is an emergency (such as the home is on fire or something sprung a leak and is damaging the unit) in which case I don't think he would be knocking. Otherwise, he/she has to give you 24 hour notice.

The rules for this vary by region. In Chicago they have to give 2 day notice in writing to enter your apartment. Except for an emergency (flooding from another unit, fire, etc.) then they can use their key. It could be harassment otherwise.

Double check your lease agreement before letting him in. MOST state laws state that the landlord must give you 24 to 48 hour notice before coming into your rental property, unless there is a fire, flood or some other type of "Act of God".

There are laws that protect you as the tenant, please look into them so you know your rights

You don't have to open the door but if he has a key, he might come in (thinking you aren't home.) That happened to me. I was getting out of the shower and didn't hear the door. I walked out to the hall, wearing a towel and there was my landlord, his wife and his parents. They walked right in my house. I was horrified. Be careful if your landlord has a key. It is best to answer the door and only open it a little bit, and just say you aren't feeling well and aren't up to visitors.

Well I'll tell you what - one time, I was avoiding my landlord, and he just opened my door with his copy of my apartment key (the bastard). I seriously wanted to bash his head for doing it.

So be careful. If he's aware that you ARE home, he might just do that if the apartment contract makes any mention of this - euphimistically, of course

Lora da Explora
well he IS your landlord so......i think you should
