upsucker | If people hired arsonists to torch the houses that were worth less than the mortgage, we the economy be OK now? |
|

No.
Anyone not willing to pay their mortgage isn't going to be paying their insurance. Low lifes are just that, they are LOW. Of course a few people may be low enough to risk the lives and property of their neighbors, CA has lost lots of homes and lives to arsonist in the last couple of years, and not one of them helped the economy in anyway. CA just about went broke this summer fighting the arson fires, as well as loosing several firefighters, 2 National Guards, as well as innocent people. |

Well, no because it is also insurance companies that are needing the bailout as well.
Back to the drawing board. |

You should have been around in the 60's and 70's -- to see what results from that tactic. The economy falls apart, and people leave. (See: South Bronx, NY 1975)
(and, no) |

We'd be spending $700B to bail out the insurance companies. |

No. If the insurance companies covered the losses, they would be put out of business. Insurance companies invest the money they earn in the stock market and other investments, so it goes back into the economy. If the insurance companies had to sell off those investments, it would drive the prices of those stocks and investments down and the economy would be worse than it is now.
Eventually, insurance companies would stop being able to offer new policies and people wouldn't be able to buy new houses unless they paid all cash for them because lenders won't give mortgages unless the house is insured.
Plus, arson is illegal and jail sucks. |
|

No, because the cost of hiring the arsonists would be more than the cost of the house. |

NO... It the homes were burnt down (first of all that is insurance fraud and you would go to jail for a long time) then the insurance company would pay the mortgage company money to pay off the mortgage. But then it would be the insurance companies that were going bankrupt right now. Which would mean that the insurance industry would be destroyed instead of stalled (as it is right now).
The only thing that will help the economy is to have people keep on paying their mortgages and other bills. That keeps the companies open that issued the people credit. It is the honorable thing to do and it is the only thing that will help our economy. Just because we are seeing so many people walk away from their mortgage debts does not mean that it is right or right for the economy.
I'm so sick of hearing people say "everyone else is letting their home get foreclosed so why shouldn't I". No matter how bad your mortgage is, you signed the papers and took the loan. |

No...insurance would probably not pay off to arson and then the person would have no home and still have all that debt. |

yeah, now there's a plan. Holy crap! |
